OWENS family
« on: Monday 13 March 06 11:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to trace details of the OWENS family who were at 'Pantricknow' in Fossoway and Tullibole at the time of the 1841 census.  They seem to have had lots of children, but I can't find any record of them in the OPRs.  I think the father John was Irish.

Does this family sound familiar to anyone?  Or can anyone suggest what non-'Established Church of Scotland' churches they may have attended - on the offchance that the births were registered there?

The family are
John OWENS
Margaret OWENS (nee DRUMMOND)

and kids:
Edward, Margaret, John, another Margaret (although I think she may actually have been a Mary), Eliza, Helen, Isabella and William.

There was at least another child, Catherine, but I think she was born in Clackmannanshire and that was after the 1841 census.

All help and ideas are gratefully received  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Where is 'Pantricknow' in Fossoway and Tullibole could it be that

'Pantricknow' is Rantricknow' or  as now "Rantrie Know".

Hi Lucan,

From looking at the map you have attached, Rantrie Know seems like a via option - thanks :-).  I have seen many 'mistranscriptions' of place names over the years.

However - if that is still in Fossoway and Tullibole parish, then I would expect to find the details of the baptisms in that parish's OPRs.  So either the births were not registered or weren't registered at a Church of Scotland church or they moved into that area just before the 1841 census.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Lucan,

While that sounds fabulous - I can't get there on Saturday.

I will continue my search - and extend to the Catholic registers which are now avaiable at Scotland's People.

Cheers,

Hi Clare,
I have been researching this family for a number of years and have only just noticed your post.
My great-great-grandfather was John Owens born Fossaway, 1833-34 (1871 Census).
His third son James, born Tillcoultry 1865 came to Australia in 1884.
I have a family tree which I am still working on.
Do you have any information about the family of John Owens?
Thanks,
John from Queensland
