hailes/hales family PLEASE HELP
« on: Wednesday 13 November 13 12:04 GMT (UK) »
hello everyone.   I am trying to find out any information on this family and I am at a total loss.
MERIDITH HAILS or HALES and his wife MARTHA SLOAN.  all I can find on them is that they had the following children, that I know of.  FRANCIS HALES born 18 feb 1858 at bo'ness
ELIZABETH HAILS  born 15 sept 1859 at bo'ness
AGNES HAILS born 13 june 1856 at bo'ness
and a MARY HAILS born abt 1855, don't know where.
MEREDITH and MARTHA were from Ireland, but I cant find anything about them.  the only thing I have found is the 1861 census for bo'ness in Scotland.  PLEASE any help will be greatly appreciated.

many kind regards from heather

Hi

There is a Meredith Hales b 1821 Ireland living in the Monklands area of Lanarkshire as an ironstone miner in the 1851 census.

On Scotlands People there is a death for a Meredith Hailes  and for a Martha Hailes in Boness in 1864. If you download the certs (pay per view credits) it should take you further. They are the only Hailes deaths in Boness between 1861 and 1871.

The only other thing I can see is another death in Boness for a Francis Hales in 1858 - this would  certainly explain absence from 1861 census.

Could the other children have gone to Ireland?

i don't know about the other children.....if Meredith and his wife died in 1864,  mary would have only been abt 9 years old, agnes 7 and Elizabeth 4.   I don't know where to look for them , they may have went with relatives but ?????

Heather

William's found a possible entry for Meredith in 1851. I think there may also be one for Martha. FreeCen, if you want to check there show a:

MARTH. (female) SLOIN, 24, agr. lab b. LEITRIM Ireland (thought the place of birth for this entry might be of worth keeping in mind for later searches). She is lodging, a W (widow) against her marital status and staying at a lodging house in Newbigging, Inveresk Midlothian.

1871 shows the following possibilites (as transcribed):

Agnes Hales, 14, domestic servant and b. Bo'ness. She is working at 83 St Andrew St, Leith Midl.

Mary Hailer, 14, domestic servant and born Donna, Linlithgowshire. She is working at 9 Cross Street, Linlithgow.

Struggle with any clues for Elizabeth  :-\

Monica

Added: Mary I think is still unmarried in 1881 as there shows:

Mary Hailles, 25, table maid b. Bo'ness at 4 Inverleith Ter, Edinburgh.
