Was James Hodson (1753-1812) a Cambridge University quack?
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 18:10 BST (UK) »
James Hodson (born 1753 in Burton on Trent) lived in Cambridge from about 1768 (starting as a printing apprentice to his older brother, Francis) to about 1892, when he moved to London. In London he eventually became a printer on Cross Street in Hatton Garden and, later, an ordained minister in the New Church (Swedenborgians). He died April 16, 1812.

In addition to printing and proselytizing, from about 1783 through at least 1800, Hodson fervently purveyed four quack medicines: Hodson's Parisian Vegetable Syrup (an "improved" Velnos' Vegetable Syrup); Persian Restorative Drops; Egyptian Balm; and Imperial Oil.

Presenting himself as "J. Hodson M.D.", he writes at least two medical sales books: "Nature's assistant to the restoration of health" (1785) and "Medical facts and advertisements" (1795). The former book is dedicated to Charles Collignon, Professor of Anatomy at Cambridge University because of, Hodson states, "the improvement I received under your instructions". Collignon was a Cambridge professor from 1769-1785.

Does anyone have any evidence (or sources I could research) that James Hodson received a medical degree from Cambridge University circa 1780?

There is a CD published in 2000 by a section of Ancestry.com, entitled "Cambridge University Alumni 1261-1900" if anyone has access to it (I don't, at the moment, but may be able to have a look next week at our FH library)

This should list him, if he did indeed graduate from there.

Hi

Checked the 'Cambridge University Alumni 1261-1900' on Anc*, there isn't a James Hodson/ Hodgson in that timeframe, sorry.

Thank you for checking, Claire. I will not be surprised if he actually does not have a degree as he appears to be practicing some flim flam during his "vegetable syrup" years. For instance, he was one of many people falsely claiming to own the original recipe to the popular "Velnos' Vegetable Syrup".

And thanks for the lead on the will, Giblet. I had seen that and had it transcribed. Unfortunately it doesn't mention anything to do with his patent medicines or that part of his life -- simply talks about assets he has as a printer. That made me think these might be two different James Hodsons, but the fact the obituaries refer to "Doctor" dieing on the very same day and had the same address as the printer (15 Cross Street, Hatton Garden) makes it extremely likely it is the same man.

Kate,
Thanks! I was able to search that and he doesn't appear there either. I'm sure the info may help others.

James Hodson was the husband of my 3x great aunt Harriet Clarkson.  I have never encountered any mention of his "medical" exploits in my research so your message interested me.  Do you have family connections to him?
