Help needed reading military record from Burma campaign
« on: Monday 17 March 14 12:20 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with the attached record? It relates to an officer in the 4th/7th Rajputs who joined the regiment (from the 9/7th Rajputs) on 16th April 1944. This was in the middle of the battle of Kohima and I'm keen to find out if he took part in the later stages of the battle. Following on from the note of his transfer are these three entries. I take it the first line reads "Admitted to CIMH Ch..d...a" and the date could be 3-4-44. This would be before the line above which gives his transfer as 16-4-44. I think the next two lines read "Joined the .. from 31 Reinf Camp" with a date of 28/4/44, but the final line beats me completely. I think it says "ceased B......  .......". any ideas anyone, and also can anyone read the location of the CIMH (I think this is Combined Indian Military Hospital, but would be happy to be corrected)

Dear Old Bristolian,
CIMH would indeed stand for Combined Indian Military Hospital, one at Chindwara, in the Central Provinces, which was the base of the 14th Indian (Training) Division.
"Joined the Bn. (battalion) from 31 Reinforcement Camp" is the next line. I'm afraid the last line is incomprehensible to me too.

Thanks Raghu

I'm sure what you suggest is correct - I keep looking at the last line and think I can work out individual letters, but nothing makes any sense

Middle word on last line looks like 'Broken'
"Ceased Broken ---ra"?  :-\

Hello Old Bristolian, I have been looking at your photo. 31 Reinforcement Camp was Comilla. I suggest that the last line reads: "Crossed Bramha Putra". The dates would seem to confirm this as the route from Calcutta to Comilla meant crossing both the Ganges and the Bramha Putra rivers.
The following link may help you.

Hope this is useful to you.

Glad I was able to help you Old Bristolian. I too have an interest in the Far East Campaign of WWII, my late father was a signaller with the 1st Bn Northamptonshire Regiment around Imphal and Silchar.
I am an honorary memeber of the Birmingham Branch of the Burma Star Association and have the honour to be their Standard Bearer too, look us up on Facebook and post questions there too, it may help. www.facebook.com/BurmaStarBrum

I also know several Chindits as I did some work for them on their memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.

All the best

Chinthecarver.
