(*Completed with thanks*)In a pickle with Alexander(s) Jolly
« on: Wednesday 29 January 14 14:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
Thought I had this man in his proper place but now I'm having doubts...
1851 Census
JOLLY Alexander Head M 74 Crofter 5 acres Kincardineshire Arbuthnott
RENNIE Isabel Wife M F 65 Kincardineshire Arbuthnott
living at Grange in Kinneff & Catterline
This couple married in 1826 at Arbuthnott - I'm sure he is son of Alexander Jolly and Margaret Grant born 1777 at Arbuthnott.
then
1841 Census
JOLLY Alexander M 55 Independent Kincardineshire
JOLLY Isabella F 48 Kincardineshire
STEWART Catherine F 28 FM Kincardineshire (FM female maid??)
Living at Townhead in Bervie
I had convinced myself these were the same couple BUT ages are so far out,her name is spelled differently, occupations are different plus they've moved! Trouble is I can't find two Alexander and Isabella in 41 and 51 only one in either year.
Can't even see the trees at the moment let alone the woods...

Thanks to a PM (with additional information :))for reminding me - this is now sorted.  Alexander died in 1855 - the year of the wonderful death certs that list everything bar the kitchen sink.  Showed Alexander had only moved to the district 11 years previous so the move I was worried about was possible.

Jen, glad you sorted out with Pm help what you needed  :)

Remember to check with Wills & Testaments for possible additional (free from index) help, such as:

Mrs Isabel Jolly JOLLY 14/10/1868, alias  RENNIE, Widow of Alexander JOLLY, Resideing at GRANGER of KINNEFF   - STONEHAVEN SHERIFF COURT   SC5/41/21

Monica

Added: Searching for Joll* ref Kinc* in Wills & Testaments shows 21 entries, though most later.

Your right about Alexander Jolly and Isobel Rennie.  Alexander Jolly and Margaret Grant is Alexander's Father, but he is also father to Robert Jolly my 3xgreat grandfather and a Francis Jolly.  I'm new to this so I'm going to ask a question and I hope you guys can help me out . Alexander Jolly Senior is the son of Alexander Jolly and Jean Gildawie who married in 1750, but I cannot find where This Alexander Jolly was born. The only one I can find was born in 1729 (right age area) but this one was in Montrose! Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks     David

Hi David,
I'm currently in Spain so no paperwork with me! I'm currently working on all the Kincardineshire Jollys including Alexander and Margaret Grant. There is another couple with the same NAMES living in Montrose but he's a cabinet maker I think - sorry off the top of me head.  I'll be back in France end of March - happy to share anything I've got then. PM me a reminder.

Hi Jenny, Thanks for getting back so quickly. Enjoy your time in Spain, I hope the weather is better there than it is here in Glasgow.   You might be interested in looking up "Arbuthnott"  by George Suttie Clark on the internet. It has quite a lot of info on Jolly's living in Arbuthnott and the things going on in the area. It was written in the early 1900's looking back 60 years. It also mentions the Reids in the area, one of them being Margaret Jolly who was married to Hugh Reid.
Anyway enjoy    speak to you soon      David Jolly

Hi Jenny,  This might be of interest to you. It's a thesis done by a Kathrin Zickerman about Alexander Jolly. Robert Jolly and a George Jolly who were traders between the Mearns and Germany in the late 1600's and early 1700's

It might be worth having a look as Alexander was the captain of the Ships

Hi David,
I've had a look at my pile of papers but can not help with Alexander's father.  I've got the early 1800 Jollys in parish groups.  So far I've three groupings for Arbuthnott. John Jolly and Christian Garvie (five children one of whom is Robert of the Bamff farm fame).  Alexander Jolly and Margaret Grant (also five children one of whom is Robert who marries Isabel Bisset - your 3XGF I hope!). Then a William Jolly and a Margaret Inglis (not sure how many children but at least one Francis in the list). Both John and Alexander start their families around the same time (1770s) but William is later (1790s).

The parish groupings are probably a false construct but I need some way to manage the families. I should add this is very much a work in progress and the only family group I'm near to completing is John Jolly and Margaret Brand of Fordoun (9 children first born 1776 - I have death certs for 6 of them). I'm thinking of buying stock in SP!

I'm hoping to leave family history until the winter as I need to get my skates on and start sowing seeds and digging my veggie plot.
