Welsh name ... English transcribers?

I have an interesting one here.

Baptism (per FreeREG): ?gin Day, son of Richard, baptized Corby, Lincolnshire 14 April 1622

Second (or three?) marriage (per FreeREG): Heaven? Day & Abigail Steephens, Wellingborough, Northants 14 July 1659

Children (all baptized in Higham Ferrers, Northants):

Dinah, daughter of Huen, 15 November 1657
Anne, daughter of Hewin, 3 June 1661
John, son of Hughen & Hannah, 10 October 1663
Hannah (my ancestor), daughter of Hughin & Hannah, 12 March 1665/6

Hanah Day buried Higham Ferrers 7 August 1684

Hewin Day buried Higham Ferrers 18 January 1694/5


I cannot find any evidence for the baptism or marriage of the presumptive father Richard Day in Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire or Cambridgeshire.

I am wondering, therefore, whether I should be assuming that Richard Day was a Welshman ... and that his son's name ?gin, Heaven?, Huen, Hewin, Hughen or Hughen is a collection of Englishmen's attempts at rendering Owain or Ieuan or some such into English.

Any thoughts??

The Apostle John in Welsh is known as Ioan; Iwan and Ieuan are related names. Any of these, in various accents, could I imagine give rise to the transliterations you have.

This is interesting, Genechaser. My information comes from FreeGEN, whose transcribers for the Corby baptism registers 1564 - 1650 and 1813 - 1890 were Bryan Burke, Kerry Young and Gary Percival. You obviously have another information source. Is it your own transcription, or are you reliant upon somebody else's palaeography as I am at this point?
