Hamilton Howe & family (need help)
« on: Friday 08 February 13 19:43 GMT (UK) »
I am new to Irish records .. so don't know where to start. What I have is a Hamilton Howe born 1813 to 1818 in Fermanagh County Ireland. He married a Jane ( I think her maiden name was Brown) .. the date of birth I have for her is also 1818. Lets say they married abt 1830. I know for sure they had one son Joseph born Ireland 6 May 1841 ... (also possible is son Hamilton born 1832 / son Marvin born 1838). This family now came to Canada (Quebec first, and then Caradoc township, Middlesex County, Ontario) .... where Hamilton Sr died Oct 1892. The 1911 Ontario Canadian census gave the year of 1843 as date of Immigratin to Canada. I only have one piece of info. giving Fermanagh County as their home County in Ireland ... so assuming it is correct, would like to see if I could find the marriage record for Hamilton & Jane (and birth record for Hamilton) ... and what area in Fermanagh they lived in ... and possibly who Hamilton's parents were.
Any help ... would be a start..... the 1871 Ontario Canada census gave Hamilton's age as 58 .. but that could be off a little bit .. same census gave wife Janes age as 54.
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

Hamilton Howe is not an uncommon name in Fermanagh it seems.

Your second entry for a Hamilton howe, 'a death record in Middlesex County Ontario' (from family search..... that of Hamilton Howe died 6 March 1882... I am thinking your town listing is a mistake ... likely should read Strathroy, Middlesex.
If I am right that they came to Canada in 1843 . then possibly they could be found in the Irish 1841 census. I have got record that Hamilton and wife Jane had .... son: Hamilton born Ireland 1832 / and son Marvin born Ireland 1838 ... and third son Joseph born Ireland in 1841.
Hamilton Sr is buried in Campbell Cemetery Caradoc township, Middlesex C. Ontario .... the stone reads Hamilton Howe died Oct 15 1892 .. age: 82 yrs & 6 Mos A NATIVE OF FERMANAGH IRELAND. If my math is right . that would put him born Ireland in 1810.

Ages were not always calculated correctly so difficult to pin down an exact year of birth. Unfortunately the first complete census for Ireland is 1901. Only a few bits for some places survive- there is some 1821 for Fermanagh in PRONI-

Hi,Just read your question on the 2 Hamilton Howes and yes there seems to be a mystery there. Hamilton Howe Sr. is my gr. gr. grandfather. Hamilton Howe Sr. farmed in Caradoc township just south of Strathroy Ontario Canada. Hamilton Howe Jr was a cabinet maker by trade and lived in Arkona Ontario which is about 20 miles NW of Strathroy. Records show he moved to Strathroy to practice his trade. I have photos of the headstones for both Howes. I have a list of descendants of Hamilton Howe Sr. but it doesn't show Hamilton Howe Jr. I would like to think they are father and son due to their similar names, living in close proximity, and both from Ireland. So far I have not got any evidence showing that. Have you found anything and if I could be of help what or where would you like me to search?
