Lookup Request - Inverness-shire
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 20:21 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Wondering if some kind soul could help me to pinpoint the census records for this chap....

  • PC Ewan Cameron was a native of Glenelg who joined the Inverness-shire Constabulary on 3/3/1883 after 18 months previous service in Glasgow City Police. After his first two years in Lochaber, the remainder of PC Cameron 's service was spent entirely within the Isle of Skye - Carbost (twice), Portree, Staffin, Colbost, Uig and Isleornsay (twice)(son born in his first stint there). Cameron  retired to Glenelg from his last posting at Isleornsay (Sleat) on 10/5/1917.

I have him in 1901, in Sleat aged 52, with wife Maggie. Kids: Kenneth, Ewen, Norman and Archibald.  His place of birth is noted as Kilmuir, Skye.

And in 1891, in Sleat aged 44, with wife Maggie. Kids: Christina, Archibald & Kenneth.  His place of birth is noted as Kilmuir, Skye.

I have been taking potluck on Scotlands People trying to pick him up in 1881 and 1871, but not picking the right ones, so wonder if someone could help narrow the search before I spend a heap more money!!

Thanks in anticipation,

Anna

Do you know when he married Maggie? Would he be with her and any children in 1881 or was this before he married? And do you know his parents' names?

Hi, yes, he married Maggie MacDonald 1895 Duirinish.
His parents were Archibald & Mary (nee MacLeod) Cameron.
Archibald died in Glenelg in 1903.
I have Archibald & family  in Glenelg in the 1871 Census (including Ewan aged 15 born Glenelg)
Hope this is of some help.
I used to have a subscription to An*****y.com , but I gave it up a few years back.
Thank you
A

Not a lot of success, but, clutching at straws, in the 1881 Census, I did find a Ewen Cameron,
born Kingussie about 1851, Police Constable, living in Kirkton of Fortingall, Perthshire.
He is described as a Boarder with the Menzies family.
Maybe he's one of the "red herrings" you've previously come across?

PC Cameron (senior) began at Fort William in 1883 then transferred as follows:
6/1884 to Corran;
7/85 Carbost;
5/86 Portree;
10/87 Staffin;
4/89 back to Carbost;
12/92 Uig;
2/95 Colbost;
5/96 Isleornsay;
5/02 Edinbane;
6/07 back to Isleornsay until he retired in 1917.

All locations (after Corran) are on the Isle of Skye.

Thank you Agnes, thank you Dave  :) ... I think the Kingussie one is a red herring.
I have now found Ewen in the 1891 census in Bracadale.  Again, he is saying he was born in Kilmuir, Skye.

In the 1871 and 1861 census it says he was born Glenelg  ???

So, its now just the 1881 census that I'm missing for him

Hi Anna,

Have you tried the Mitchell Library for his police record in Glasgow. It should have an address for him at the start of his police service which looks to be in 1881?
