Furnace Row,Boness,1866 *COMPLETE*
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 17:56 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on Furnace Row,Boness - specifically No.16 - in or around 1866. Wondering if it was a large building or a house in a row of small miner`s  cottages?
This address has connections to the Lister side of my family.
Any help appreciated.

A Ballantine & Sons have have had a Foundry in Links Road Bo'ness since 1856.
Still trading today at the same address. I would guess Foundry Row would be nearby.

Now trading as Ballantine Bo'ness Iron Co Ltd.

James.

The Foundry Square area was stll there in 1937 as told in this article.

25 June 1937
A young miner, John Blair, 17 Foundry Square, Grangepans, Bo'ness, was killed when caught up and dropped by the coal conveyor system in Furnaceyard Pit yesterday. Blair sustained severe head and body injuries. He was 24 years of age, and leaves a widow and family of two. Work was suspended at the colliery, and miners arriving to go on the next shift returned home. [Scotsman 26 June 1937]

Just checking - it's definitely Foundry Row and not FURNACE Row?

Furnace yard Rows and Newton, Bo'ness
A number of houses situated in Furnace Row are within the Burgh of Bo'ness. A number are of the one-room type. They have been built for a long period, and are much similar in construction to one-roomed houses already described. Of course, being under the Burgh, there is a lighting, drainage, and sewerage scheme, and the scavenging is carried out each day by the Burgh's workmen.

Note that Furnace Row is listed as in Kinneil Village, the western end of modern day Bo'ness. I'll try and find it on an old map I've got somewhere.

Furnace Rows are shown on Old Maps. They are to the West of the Rail Station
and lay near to the waters edge next to Kinneil Iron Works, separated from the
River Forth by the Rail Line.

Beat me to it James - see http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74963111.

Think Furnace Row may be on the extreme left of this map. The Iron Works are just off to the left.
