You can get the standard info on Wiki:

born 8 August 1757 Glendinning, Westerkirk, Eskdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Father: Thomas Telford (died 1757), Shepherd
Mother: Janet Jackson (died 1794)
Died 2 September 1834, 24 Abingdon Street, Westminster, London

After his death, his clerk reported "Telford had no blood relations that we knew of"

Are you trying to link him to your tree  :o

Thanks KGarrad for your reply.

I'm not claiming any link to the family as yet JL.

I received a reply from a newly found cousin of my Gabriel family on GR this morning.Amongst the notes on his earliest Gabriel ancestors is a statement that the Gabriel family is reputed to have some connection with the family of Thomas Telford.

As always with some of these claims I am naturally sceptical but nonetheless lets say quietly intrigued.

Hi I know this it's a while since you posted this but wondered if you'd had any luck?  I think I've tied him in to my family tree through the surname Jackson(shepherds in Eskdale :) :), Dumfriesshire).  There seems to be a lot of Jacksons marrying Jacksons so if that ties in with your tree it might be worth investigating.
It certainly is intriguing to think you might be related to such a clever man from humble beginnings!

Thanks NewRhi for your reply.I can't say I've come across any further info to support my cousin's speculative claim.Where do your Furness family hail from?

The Furness family I'm looking at are from Chesterfield, Derbyshire(I've gone back to 1801 so far).  I've been lucky as they stayed in the one town for two centuries!  This is my husband's side unconnected to the Telfords which are my side of the family.

I haven't come across that name yet but sounds like it might be good to trace as unusual! :)
