Gluttons for punishment - brick wall for George Hinchliffe
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 15:57 BST (UK) »
Still looking for the fate of George who disappears after the 1851 census.  I don't want to waste anyone's time looking where others have looked before but would be grateful to anyone willing to have another go.  Hammers and chisels are in the corner please help yourselves.  Safety goggles must be worn at all times  8)

1841 Huddersfield he is age 5 living with father James mother Sarah and several siblings

1851 Huddersfield he is age 16 woollen finisher man living with widowed mother Sarah and sisters
Charlotte and Emma

Father died in 1843.  Sarah remarries and is with her new husband William Woodhead in Cumberworth in 1861.  No George nor is he with any of his siblings and their families.

I have ruled out several marriages as they all have the wrong father and have asked where his mother and siblings are buried (Edgerton Cemetery) but they had no record of him.

Am keeping a list called "the wrong George" which is getting quite extensive!
He isn't the one in Derbyshire married to Jane.
He isn't either of the 2 deaths in 1860, nor the 2 deaths in 1856.
He isn't the George married to Ann Cuckson/Cookson.
I've eliminated 9 marriages between 1851-1861 plus the one in Australia married to Frances.

It was suggested he could have died in an epidemic and been buried fast without being registered.
Were there any such epidemics in the 1850's in that area?

I suppose he could have forgotten his father's name and given another one if he married but am clutching at straws there.

I would love to find what happened to him.  Thank you for reading and if I can elaborate on anything that might help please ask  :)

Hello,

Questions sorry  ::)

Do you have a baptism record- wondered if he was perhaps Charlotte's child?

As you say, he might just have given the wrong name on a marriage.
Regards
Heywood

Hi Milliepede

Can you give us the names and ages of all the people in the household in 1841?  I am having trouble replicating that search on Ancestry and FindMyPast.

Unfortunately I don't have a baptism record for him.  There were 9 children and I have only found them for the oldest 5.
Can only assume he is James' because Sarah is down as his mother in 1851 and she was together with James in 1841 but you never know.

1841 Allen Row Huddersfield

James Hinchliffe 45
Sarah 48
Charlotte 23
Mark 18
Herodia 18 (not twins)
Elizabeth 12
Thomas 11
Emma 8
George 5
John 2 months (son of Charlotte)
Abraham Hilton 20
Amelia Hilton 20 (nee Hinchliffe another sister)

Sorry that was a little rushed page froze on me and going out at 8, back later thanks  :)

I know you have looked at deaths but there are about 8 for George plus a couple for a George with another name  ::)

When did his mother marry and where is Charlotte in 1861?

James & Sarah married in 1816.
Sarah & William married in 1854.  Sarah died in 1864.

Charlotte died in 1857.  She never married but had two sons - John on the 1841 who died as a baby and Lewis in 1849.
