Hi MonicaL- I have emailed SP and will see what they say abt the parish Samuel was born in in Armagh- thanks for the link.

Hi Nanamurray my hubands link to Samuel is detailed in the Personal message I sent you on this site ,so have a peruse when you can. I have the death record for Samuel b1859 downloaded from SP and it says as follows... Samuel Murray ; retired Blacksmith; single; died 15 Nov 1949  at Darniemow, Glenwhilly; M; age 89; parents Samuel Murray, Blacksmith, Deceased and Minnie Murray M.S.Gown deceased; died of Senile decay , Fracture of Femur; registered At New Luce. so I dont think that is the same Samuel who went to England when young what do you think?

Hi All,
I have arrived late on this having only just picked-up the postings on the Murray family in New Luce and wonder what progress has been made on Sam. and Minnie?

Hi Solway,

I can evidence Samuel b 1826 Drummond, Armagh as a direct ancestor of my husbands , I have never found out his parents though- I'm not much good with Irish research. I have Sam and Minnie as having  5 children john James Jane Samuel and Agnes. [John is the our line].  No further progress really just what you see here. Any pearls of wisdom to cast this way ?

Try the following:
Obtain Minnie's death cert. from SP (1888) which gives her parents.
Obtain Samuel's death cert. from SP (1883), using McMurray as his surname and which gives his parents.
Use McMurray for 1881 census.
Not sure but the Samuel to which you refer may be the grandson of Sam. and Minnie, i.e. son of John and Helen McDowall, born abt. 1880.
Hope this assists meantime.
Bob.

Hi Solway ,
thanks to you I now have the parents of Samuel Mc Murray [b 1826 in Drummond Armagh] from his death record. ie Samuel McMurray [dec]- a Crofter and Mary Mc Kie. No marriage for them on SP . Ideas how to find out about them?

Finding the actual smithy in New Luce....update ...

I have valuation roll entry in 1915  which has John [son of Samuel b1826] and Johns son Samuel [b 1889] as tenant of a house and smithy just 3 buildings after the Kenmuir Hotel if the buildings are in order on valuation roll then it must be close. In the opposite direction from the Kenmuir hotel is the police house and  police station [9 entries after it] Does that help anyone with local knowledge pinpoint the actual house and Smithy please?   :'(

grateful as always to members of this great site  8)

Hi Solway
Thanks very much for the info and wonderful pics you emailed me . I will get back to you when I get time to go through it all and fill in any gaps I can for you in return. I should have shares in Scotlands People! It turns out that my gg grandfather Gordon was the letter carrier in New Luce at the same time my hubby's gg grandfather Samuel Murray was around and they must have known each other living only a few hundred yards apart !!!

I suppose this thread is now completed and I will mark it so when I work out how to.

Best wishes
