Hi Jeff

Could be the 35th Regiment, Royal Sussex. They were in Portsmouth and Cork at the right time  - although you need to give the month of his birth as they were not in Cork all year. After 1873 they formed a Brigade Depot with the 107th Foot in Chichester.

They were in Newcastle for the 1871 census.

If you do not have it, you should try and get the birth certificate for the son born in Cork. The Irish GRO only charge four Euros for it on plain paper, and it should give his regiment.

there is a service record for an Edward Butler of the 35th regiment on findmypast,,,,,it does say he was born 1841,,,but its not uncommon for years of birth to be out by a couple of years. Don't know know how you are going to prove its the correct one though,,,no family info is given on the record,,,but its the right name,,and the right regiment. :)

some other corroborating evidence found in the record,,,he was born in St Lukes..London,,Middlesex,,,and according to his medical record,,he was in Cork for sure on the 19/9/1873,,,and in Portsmouth in 1868.He was a shoemaker    and his intended residence on leaving the army in 1878 was Chichester. :)

I believe we are on the right track, as you say Edward Butler born 1841 London is very common. Edward Butler was born 17 Sept 1842 in St Sepulchre, London, his parents were John and Lucy
1861 census has him living with his brother his occ; them he was tea packer and living in Finsbury. I will have to try and get hold off Edward and Sarah Eleanor Spencer marriage in 1868 in Portsea.
Will have to read up on the 35 regiment .
It is interesting that this rootsweb chat line is working when  all rootsweb mailing lists are down

Hi gortonboy
In your reply you say they where in Newcastle for the 1871 census is that the Regiment or Edward and Sarah, as I having trouble finding them on that census.  I am not on Ancestry for the moment so it is hard to find any one.

Hi Jeff

The 35th Foot were in Newcastle for the 1871 Census. At least that was where the CO was with headquarters. They may have had detachments in other places.

To help you find them, here is a list of officers with unusual names:

Archibald Tisdall
Simpson Hackett
Samuel Fritchie Blyth
Wm Hy Ballingall
John Ormsby Vandeleur
Edward Tedlie
Richard Trimen
John Alexander Caldecott
William Poste
Wilfred Tolson
Jules R B Buscarlet
Aylmer P G Dowdall
Mallcott Sydney Richardson
Byron Plantaganet Cary
Irwin Chas Maling
Arthur Philip Hawthorn
Chas Tyrrell Cavendish

A number will be on leave, and the officers may be living away from the men.
