Thank you so much for all this. I have a lot of information about the Allan family, but had struck a roadblock about James Henry.

I don't suppose there's any sign of Alfred Selby who died in 1918? I haven't been able to find out what happened to his wife. He died on Warrandyte; did she die there or in Warrnambool?

Thanks so much for all this help.

Kind regards

Philip

Philip,

Alf Selby died Warrandyte as you say in 1918 he was listed as 81 years of age, parents are listed as unknown - Reg#15036.

Notice in The Argus, 18 December 1918: states that Captain Alfred Selby J.P. passed away on 16 December 1918 at his residence, age 82.

Elizabeth Selby died on 23 February 1912, Warrnambool, she was listed as 83 years of age, parents are listed as unknown - Reg#3844.

There are digitised Wills on the following website for both Alfred and Elizabeth.

Cheers,

Janet.

Philip,

Just in case you don't have/or you need the following information:

Alfred Selby and Elizabeth Symth had the following child:

Reginald Verner Selby, born in 1862, Melton, Reg#4047.
Reginald Verner Selby married Sarah Jane Edrick in 1886, Reg#6727.
Reginald Venner Selby died Warrnambool in 1937, Reg#19025.  Age 76.
Parents recorded as Alfred Selby and Eliz Smyth Watson.

Sarah Jane Edrich was born in 1864, Portland, Reg#17412.
Sarah’s parents were Benjamin Edrich and Elizabeth Anderson.
Sarah Jane Selby died Warrnambool in 1942, Reg#26169,  Age 78.

Cheers,

Janet.

Marriages Dec 1856
SELBY Alfred   St Geo Hanover Sq 1a/311
SMYTH Elizabeth Watson     St Geo Hanover Sq    1a/311

Their arrival in Victoria
http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=23

SELBY Alfred  20 years  Mar 1857  on the SWIFTSURE Port B   121/004

and there is only birth registered to them on the Victorian indexes and he [Reginald Verner] was born Melton.  Constance Geraldine's marriage registration also states b. Melton.

Thanks Cando,

Based on her burial information, the age could be out a bit and she could have been born on the voyage out.

If so, would it have been registered?

I'd like to thank everyone for all for this wonderful information.

I have been tracing the ALLANs of Warrnambool, but had struck a brick wall about James Henry, and for some reason I couldn't find any of the newspaper records that you have managed to track down.

William Osborne ALLAN was one of three brothers who came overland from New South Wales in the late 1830s to take up grazing opportunities in Western Victoria. The other brothers were Henry Blair Watson ALLAN and John McMahon ALLAN. They gave their name to Allandale and Allansford, both near Warrnambool. Their father - Colonel David ALLAN -  was a leading Civil Servant in the Commissariat Department of Colonial Sydney.

William Osborne ALLAN had, in addition to James Henry, two other sons: William John (about 1845-1896) and John David. I haven't been able to find any details about John David following his birth in 1847, so he may have died in infancy.

Thanks once again for taking the time and trouble to post all these very useful findings.

Kind regards

Phil Candy

Hi,

Just a snippet.

The Victoraian Government Gazette 28th October 1858 had unclaimed deeds being held at the Receipt & Pay Office Warnambool for a William Osbourne Allan.
