I have managed to trace him.
On the 14 Sept 1912 he was sentenced to 2 months hard labour for theft. Then on the 12 April 1913 he was recorded in the "missings persons" book. In other words he dissappeared.

Obviously he  survived this suicide attempt reported in a West Australian paper on Friday 4th July 1913.

This Engström in Sweden who looks to be the same man from Fremantle, left I think, in a hurry. It looks as though he didn't want to do hard labour and decided to flee Sweden. He became a sailor and took the first oportunity to jump ship.
His life also in Sweden was a tough one. Reading that document he was moved around a lot to different families. Not easy for a young boy to cope with.

Hi Aussie-girl;
I am the grandson of John Walantin Engstrom my mother was his eldest daughter. I have a lot of information on him, dating from when he arrived in Australia till his death in 1952 or there about but very little before his arrival. I am only to willing to share this info if you are interested.
