Neville Payten
« on: Monday 15 December 14 19:13 GMT (UK) »
After all the help recently received, I have another request please.

I am researching the World War One Honor Board, which was hung in the Forbes High School in 1924.

I cannot find anything about PAYTEN, N  (Neville Payten is listed in final List for Honour Roll, Forbes Advocate 4 March 1924).

I realise that Payten can be spelled many ways, and that Neville may not be his correct name or his second name.

Help please - any information, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

Jean

I just had a look at the ADFA site for the Great War and searched both Payton and as many variations as I could muster but nothing. I then searched for just those from FORBES and nothing that even looks remotely like Payton ???

Hi there,

Some thoughts

:) Does the Forbes Library's family history section have historic electoral rolls, not just the ones available via Ancestry, but the ones prior to Federation and then prior to WWI ?

:) I seem to recall that there's Payton's Bridge in the extended district.

From the 1903 NSW ER CANOBOLAS, polling at Forbes
(the roll is meant to be in alphabetical order by surname, please note I am typing it exactly as I read it, and there's some slight disorder ! and while many entries include detailed addresses, James Patrick PAYTON's does not, so he had been on the roll for quite some time when this 1903 roll was prepared)

PAYTON, James Patrick, (of) Forbes, hotel keeper
PAYTEN, Nancy, (of) Metropolitan Hotel, domestic duties

Cheers,  JM

Sands 1919 Country Commercial Directory FORBES
A.M.C. HAYDON, Metropolitan Hotel.

Could HAYDON be a spelling error for PAYTEN/PAYTON or vice versa ….

While not definitive there is no birth for any of the Paten variables or births for first name NEVILLE (first or second name) in the BDM indexes for Parkes or Forbes or surrounding country towns.

I used the P* and then N* and just NEVILLE without any success.
Unless you can check these remote ones like...
THOMAS N PAINTER, FATHER JOHN, MOTHER EMMA J, AT PARRAMATTA REF # 33602/1896
MODIFIED
Cross referencing the above with the embarkation roles he was Thomas Norman ::)

I wonder if there is any connection ?

There’s mention of a Neville A PAYTEN and a Neville Algernon PAYTEN in the NSW Police Gazettes late 1921 and into 1922.  He is the victim.  The offender was charged with stealing in a dwelling, the matter was listed for Sydney Quarter Sessions.
