Robert Ferguson/Annie Morton - Dungiven
« on: Sunday 20 January 08 15:39 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace the birth dates of my great grandparents.
The information I have is from their wedding certificate (year 1878):
Robert - of full age when married, residence Moys, father Joseph Ferguson
Annie - of full age, residence Ballyhargan, father John Morton
I've tried Emerald Ancestors with no success.
Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

Do you have the exact date of the marriage?
Daughter Martha born 19 May 1878 Ballyhargan, Londonderry to Robert Ferguson and Annie Morton.
Marriage certificates do not list birthdates and civil registration of births only started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to check church records (of they still exist).

Yes - date of marriage 16.05.1878 - 3 days before the birth of Martha their eldest daughter. They had 8 children in total including my grandfather and I've tracked down most of their information, but I'm stuck with this generation. When I searched for Ballyhargan I couldn't find it but presume it is a village near to Moys in Limavady.

Moys is a townland in the Parish of Carrick: (857 acres 0 rods 34 perches) meaning 'the plains' in west of parish east of Ballydarrog south of Terrydrum and west of Ballymore + Carrick (village of Moys is here), was taken from Parish of Tamlaght-Finlagan. Adjoins Parish of Bovevagh.
Could this be your Ballyhargan?:
Ballyharigan townland in Bovevagh Parish.

I'm really confused over the breakdown of counties, towns and villages in Ireland. A townland is equivalent to a village isn't it? I've found an address with a postcode that said Ballyhargan and when I googled mapped it it's west of Dungiven along the A6, so I'm guessing it's a village/townland?

Thanks for the questions and answers.  I have my great grandmother's (Martha Parke) birth certificate that list Ballyhargan as her birthplace.  I was quite surprised by this as I was always told she was from Feeny.  I haven't started my search on this side of the family as  I wasn't quite sure where to begin.  My g.g grandmother was also a Morton (Ellen) who married James Parke. I unfortunately haven't gone any further than this.

Cheers from Canada

Could Annie and Ellen possibly be sisters? There's only a 8 year gap in the 2 marriages.

Canada - if you want to check my tree out it's on ancestry.co.uk (Holmes/Herson). The only info I have about the Mortons is Annie's dad is John and she possibly had a sister called Jane (witness on the marriage cert).
