HOOKER family, Hemel Hempstead
« on: Friday 11 March 11 18:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information about the HOOKERs from Hemel Hempstead, perhaps originally from Chipping Barnet.
I'm especially interested in Elizabeth Hooker who married John Weedon on 11th July 1778 in Hemel Hempstead, but also her parents and any siblings.
Thanks in advance!

Herbertson, Congalton, Paterson - Scotland
Reed, Elmer - Hunts.
Branson - Bucks. and Birmingham
Warren, Ball, Jones - Birmingham
Fuller, Bourne, Sheepwash - Kent
Brittain - Beds. and W. Australia

Hello Bev J,

  The Hookers.
Now way back in my Tree I have a Charlotte Hooker b. 27th Dec. 1829 in Great Gaddeson, Herts. she came into my little tribe by marrying William Lovett, they went on to have two children ( that I can find so far ),  Mary Ann Lovett 1855 - 1889 and Henry Joseph Lovett 1859 - 1917

She may or may not be connected, but I always think in this family tree business, every little snippet might count...................

regards,

Bob Lima

Familysearch.org has an Elizabeth Hooker baptised on 30 Dec 1753 at Caddington, Bedfordshire.

Parents shown as Edward and Elizabeth Hooker.

Looks promising as that would make her 28 when marrying......?

Bev J, this is slightly spooky - I've just joined RootsChat because I stumbled across a reference to the Hookers in the 1850's and 60's.....here they are again! Not sure whether my lot are a bit too late for you, but they are very likely to have been part of the same large farming family in the mid-19thc. They lived in what is now my house, which is what brought me to the site. Let me know if that's of any interest and whether I can help out with more info. I can certainly tell you where they were and more about their village because I live here!

That's a coincidence, Mrs.D!
Are your Hookers in the Hemel Hempstead area?

Sorry, Bev, I should have made that clearer - yes, this is in Hemel Hempstead. The Hookers lived here in Piccotts End, which is just on the fringes of Hemel nowadays, but was more of a separate hamlet in earlier times. They were a farming family with a fairly respectable amount of land - 85 acres, which I presume would be leased in some way from the local landowners. David Hooker (head of the household in the 1851 census) was born in nearby Great Gaddesden in c. 1810. He was widowed by that point but the same family appears in 1841 with a Catherine Hooker as his spouse.

I've quickly checked FamilySearch.org which has a David Hooker born in May 1809 at Great Gaddesden, parents Zachariah Hooker and Lydia (Tomalin) Hooker. They have him as one of 11 siblings.

Also according to FamilySearch, a 'Zacharias' Hooker, presumably the same one as the above, was born in 1776 in Caddington, Beds. I don't know whether you're familiar with this area but none of these places are very far apart.

It seems likely that these are members of the same family, but I'm not sure how they fit together. Might give you some food for thought, though.

Thanks for the info, Mrs.D.

The girl I'm looking for is probably two generations before David.  I found an Elizabeth christened in 1746 in Hemel Hempstead, daughter of William and Sarah and TheMc found one b. 1753 in Caddington.   My problem is that 'my' Elizabeth and John  had children up to the mid-1790's and a 50-year old lady doesn't really fit the bill!  I can't find an Elizabeth born around 1760  :(

I'm sure as you say that all these Hookers are related if you go far enough back, it makes research that much more difficult when there are dozens of people with the same name living in the same village!  I'll keep looking at the family with the info you have provided, you never know, something might turn up.

Thanks!

Bev
