J M Grant - watercolourist
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 13:08 BST (UK) »
I have recently come across a couple of watercolours of the local area by a J M Grant.  I think they are late 19thC.  Does anyone know anything about him/her and whether there is anywhere on the web or are any publications featuring his/her work?

I have tracked J M Grant down and he is not one of my Grants, but will put what I have found on the site should it be of use to anyone else.

John Mantach Grant b. 11.03.1866
18, Drummond St., Edinburgh
Lawyer
Holidayed with a Miss Grant, who was said to be an aunt, at Willowbank, Knockando in the 1890s and relaxed by painting watercolours of the surrounding area.  Three of them can be seen on the Knockando Woolmill site.

Father: John Grant ( commercial traveller, brewery )
b. Banffshire Inveravon about 1822

Married: 19.04.1853, Rothes Parish

Mother: Elspat, Elspet, Elspeth - depending on which record you get up - Mantach
b. Rothes about 1823

1861 Census
18 Drummond St
John Grant head 39
Elspet Grant wife 38
Margaret daughter 5
James brother 33 spirit merchant
Christina Taylor servant

Hope this helps someone,

Jenny

Jenny,

I have just seen your message from 2011.  I am writing a book on a different Grant, but I ran across dozens and dozens of J M Grant's watercolours in one of "my" Grant's books.  They are in America.  I will be publishing them in due course.

Thanks for that.  It'd be interesting to see his work.  Good luck with the book!  Which Grant are you doing?

Sorry its been aeons since I replied last. I've been terribly busy working on transcribing the works of Pipe Major John Grant (1876-1961) of Edinburgh (Elgin-born).  Among the works he wrote was a four volume "The Highland Bagpipe and Its Music."  John Mantach Grant painted dozens of watercolours for this book and I have permission to reprint them.  You can see the result at www.pmjohngrant.com.  I tried to attach a picture here but it was too big, unfortunately.

I was interested to read about J M Grant - watercolourist. I have very recently discovered an ancestor born in Tillynaught, Banffshire, late 1790's and regularly visit that area (by chance!!). Probably no connection to the artist, but can anyone tell me if Tillynaught still exists? I would like to visit if possible. I realize that there are lots of Grants in that area, but would welcome any information. Thank you.

Susan

Yes, it does. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ5961
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Forfarian for that information about Tillynaught. I have a picture of the Cottage but didn't know how recent it was. I will look forward to going to the area come September.
