TRAYLOR in Presteigne
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 21:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi there - looking for anyone with any info on the Traylor family in Presteigne.

We know that Edwin Traylor was born in Presteigne in 1855 in what was Scotland Street and his father was William Traylor.  We have something written down that said it was the old Jail House but not sure where that came from.

If anyone has any more info that would be great.

Do you have Edwin's birth certificate? Are you sure his father is William? This is the only Edwin I can link to Presteigne at the moment
Sherrington Pembridge Radnorshire
1861 census RG/4231/16/15
James Traylor 34 Ag lab born Titley Herefordshire
Jane wife 30 Longford Shropshire
Mary A dau 10 Lyonshall Shropshire
Anne dau 7 Pembridge Herefordshire
Edwin 5 Presteigne
Caroline 3 Presteigne
Eliza 5 months Pembridge herefordshire

Looks like they moved a fair bit and have only just returned to Presteigne after the birth of Eliza in Herefordshire

Yes James marrying Jane is correct.  William must be his grandfather.

Its the "born in jail house" that we're intriged with.  Just can't track this down and get to the bottom of it.

I believe the Traylors used to own a butchers in the town at one point but this isn't there now.

They certainly moved around a lot.

Can't help with the jail house bit, sorry.

Did note that in 1861 James and Jane have changed their birthplace. James now says born in Knucklass? Radnorshire and Jane says born Presteigne.

Hello  :)

The gaol is an address on the 1851 census, and I found these photographs:

Henry Verdon was Superintendant of Police on 1851, and there were 7 Prisoners

More Prisoners in 1861, all listed by initials only

Thanks for this information.  I wonder if this was on what was called Scotland Street and could be it.

We spoke to someone in Presteigne who said that there was a house called Jail House on Clatterbrook (sp?) Lane which is next to the now John Beddowes School but this is completely in the different direction to Scotland Street so we're not sure.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Roan1949 on here?  He has posted a few things on this website a few years ago about the Traylor family and I'm convinced its connected to what I'm looking for but don't know how to get in touch with him.

Hello  :)

According to their web site, John Beddoes School:

"in 1869 the school was transformed into Presteigne County Secondary School, moving into new buildings on a site previously occupied by the County Gaol, the gaol bell being used as the school bell until 1969"

http://www.johnbeddoes.org/pages/About%20Us/HistoryJohnBeddoes.php

On the 1861 it is described as County Gaol with Henry Verdun as Governer, and next door was Station House with "First Class Police Constable" John Smith. The buildings are listed after Hereford Street.

Kind Regards
Morgan
