Hi hodrodpansy,

The info I gave you on Rebeccas is on FreeREG and Familysearch.Org (you can google them) but here are the links;
www.freereg.org.uk
www.familysearch.org
Now she is just A possible, not definite.
She looks to be illeg also and her Parents married after her Birth.

As told before Rebecca and John Gowing were NOT married when they had Samuel.
Therefore Rebecca lied when saying she was a Widow when she married John Withall.

You MUST get either Rebecca 1853 or Henry Edwin 1842's Birth Certs to get Rebeccas Birth Surname.
If you dont all your Family History will be incorrect.
I hate to be blunt but money MUST be spent in all Family History Research.

Trish :)

Just found your message.  I think you will find Rebecca is Rebecca Sherwood born 9 Sep 1810.
Parents Thomas Sherwood & Sarah Chapman.
As you say Married (or not?) to John Gowing with son Samuel born 1833
Married 28 Dec 1835 to John Withall with son Henry Edwin (1842 - ?) and daughter Rebecca (1852 -1905)

Further to my message of yesterday, sent hastily, I would add further that Rebecca Sherwood is my 2nd great grand aunt.   She was one of 12 children.
All the family are on my tree on Ancestry.co.uk if you have access to this website.

Hi Peter, sorry for the delay in replying, I only just noticed your reply, for some reason I am not alerted when a reply comes in.   I have since found out that she is Rebecca Sherwood, yes you were right, she was not married to John Gowing, their son Samuel, is in my direct line.  I would be interested to take a look at your tree, could you give me the name of your tree so I can search for it on Ancestry?  I would be interested to see where you fit in aswell.  Many thanks Jenny

Hi Jenny,
So surprised to get a reply after such a long time, had to recap on my original research.
Although no marriage record to John Gowing, marriage record to John Withall states Rebecca Gowing (Widow) ?    How was son called Samuel Gowing if she was not married ?
My tree on Ancestry is Newman/Preston Tree.  My use name is peternewman18.
I see you have a private tree on Ancestry, so you can probably send a  message from there.
Regards, Peter Newman

Hi Peter,

Rebecca passed herself off as married to John.  When their son Samuel was christened, they used the name Gowing but infact a note was added to say that it was found out after the event that they were not married.  Perhaps John was going to marry her but he died shortly after Samuels birth.

Did your family have any memories of them?  Are there any photographes relating to the family?

Thanks for replying  Jenny
