I'll sit and think about the two. A pity that John is such a common name at that period. Maybe wills could help if they exist for the two Johns. Many thanks for your help.

22 Sep 1653 Radley, Berkshire
John Cripps & Isabell Phelps.

I had to look it up but Radley appears to be only about 15 miles from Buckland, and was probably Isabel's home.

Radley PRs (transcribed by OFHS) contain no further details, unfortunately - just the date and names as above.  Names of fathers weren't entered in marriage records at that time.

Thanks Carol. Trying to think of the best way to go next. Maybe wills but a long shot I'd think. I do feel lucky though to have made it back to John.
