My mysterious great aunt
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 15:37 BST (UK) »
My great aunt Rose Eltham was born in Chilton Berkshire in 1873 as were all her siblings. Their parents were Alfred and Elizabeth (nee Annetts). On the 1881 census she is with her parents and sister Minnie and brother Ben. In 1891 she is in Kensington as a servant in the Bridges household. Then she completely disappears until record of her death 31 Jan 1950 in Cholsey Berkshire, burial in Cholsey on 4th Feb 1950 and record of probate granted to Heber Eltham (my grandfather). The 1950 records are in her (I assume) married name of Rose Mackenzie.
In the mean time the rest of the family had moved to Cholsey and Alfred became an innkeeper there. My grandfather took over the pub in 1924 after Alfred and Elizabeth died. I assume that Rose came back from wherever she had been to be with her remaining family, possibly after being widowed.
Can anyone find her in the "missing years" please.

Thank you very much, that certainly looks like her, though she seems to have acquired a middle name! Family stories said she went to London and lived with a married man who was quite well off, so when I didn't find a marriage in England, I assumed that there was some truth in it and she had adopted his surname. But only looked in London.
So she married in Ireland and lived in Smethwick for the early years of the 20th century. I wonder if she went to Ireland and met George there or he was working in England. But then why go to Ireland to marry? More usual to marry in the bride's home area. Now to try and find George in 1891 and also his death.

The nearest George I can find in 1891 is in Wales clerk to a shipbroker born Dublin and boarding with the Stothart family. Middle initial P.
Seems a long way from any of the other locations where they were known to be.

That would be the right age and gives a connection with London. I have found a George Paul Mackenzie making a lot of trips from England to Spain and Portugal from 1916 to 1928. In the earlier records he lives in Wimbledon, but later moves to Forest Hill, which I think is in Lewisham district.

26 Feb 1916   Geo      1874      n/r         Marine Underwriter   Liverpool   Vigo (Leixoes originally but crossed out)

25 May 1928   George P   1874   21 Blowson (sic) Road London SE   Merchant      Lisbon      Liverpool

My George was an Iron Merchant in 1901 and in 1911 a Manager for a shipping agent.
The George P I found in Wales in 1891 was a clerk to a shipbroker.

The occupations for the travelling George Paul do seem to have a connection with the occupations of my George, so might be the same one.
