How does one find out about Catholic people who fled France and came to Southern England changing their religion and possibly surname  eg. Rone to Ronny/ Roney

Hi roneyr_1   :)

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

What time period are we talking about, and what areas in southern England?
The Huguenots were Protestants, not Catholics...

Cheers
Prue

Hi roneyr,

The library at the Huguenot Society, website www.huguenotsociety.org.uk is very helpful and provided me with quite a lot of information regarding a name I am researching, including guidance notes and alternative libraries outside London where publications can be found.

They also publish a twice yearly magazine called 'Huguenot Families', volumes 1-10 (to March 2004) are on CD and available to purchase from the Society.

Also available on CD are 2 books - Protestand Exiles by Agnew, and List of Foreign Protestants & Aliens Resident in England 1618-1688.  They are both searchable by surname.  Perhaps these are the books found by Chris?

There is also a very good book called 'Huguenot Ancestry' by Noel Currer-Briggs & Royston Gambier. It gives you a very general background of how to research your Huguenot ancestry. There are some for sale on Amazon, although at wildly different prices. I think the £12.50 one sounds better value than the £182.21!!!!  :)
