Hoel III Duke of Brittany.
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 13:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi, this one is of curiosity mostly,
I have seen in Wiki that Hoel III Duke of Brittany died about 1156 and was of Nantes,

I have also seen in a tree, Hoel III Duke of Brittany c560-612AD of Wales.

Which is true?
or are they both true?
but they are both recorded with same family members, only the date is different.

D.
Freer, Stewart, Blair, Bruce, Wylie, Henderson, Nichols, Ward, Weddell, Waddell, Lear, Gruneison, Maitland, Freeman, Sawyers, Logan, Phillips, Whitely.
and several others.

they both have same family members,
so only one can be real.

If you look at the various claims there are some discrepancies although most online encyclopedias appear to put Hoel III Count of Nantes and son of Conan Duke of Brittany firmly in the 12th century.

The evidence for placing this first Hoel III in the 12th century appears quite credible.

The other claims for Hoel III are rather more undefined with at least one tree claiming him to be the "King of Bretons" and another "Duke of Brittany" and as you say putting him into the 7th century. There is some indication that there may have been such an individual but without being able to examine the evidence it is not possible to completely dismiss his existence - in at least some of the trees. Although others may have picked up the wrong Hoel and though poor research, or possibly wishful thinking, associated him with the wrong timeframe.

Well put Falkyrn,
it would be fair to say that the one of c560 Wales should be dismissed then, as he comes through the King Llyr line, and everyone says he is only myth.

But, I would like to think he "may" have been a real person, as does some history researchers say about King Arther, who also was myth, some are now saying that he may have been real with some things they are finding.

But hey, that's the fun in all this history chasing.

It may be that the earlier King Hoel, a nephew of King Arthur, is fictionary. His story comes from Geoffrey of Monmouth's history which is accepted now as mostly fictional. It describes Arthur as conquering Iceland, Ireland and Spain and defeating a Roman army.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Perhaps this is so Hackstaple, but stories of our myth hero's are generally scriptures of the actual event but with a few bigger tales thrown in,
don't you think?
