Hello sunny51,
Like Millmoor I suggest you check 1861 Dundee death. This will give parent's names, occupation, whether single or married & his wife's name if married. I am very surprised a Dundee ship owner would be living for years in Glasgow, Lanarkshire & Irvine, Ayrshire. (Alarm bells)
Also, familysearch has 2 James Browns born 1784 at Craig by Montrose. 1st christened 4/7/1784. Parents: William Brown & Elizabeth Strachan. 2nd christened 12/9/1784. Parents: John Brown & Jean Ruxton. Could be confused on Census Returns unless you definitely know the names of other family members.
     Good luck with your search.
          Regards,     Dod.

Hi

Just read another thread explaining how to find wills in New Zealand. It works! John Macmillan Brown's will is CH 17616 in the New Zealand wills section of Family Search - go to the Christchurch wills. There is a lot there and I have only skimmed though it but names mentioned include daughters Viola and Millicent and nieces Georgina and Margaret McKinlay. Hope of some help to you.

Hi,
Finally found the couple mentioned before on the 51 census...they are still living on Williams Street. So from the 51 census both born in Montrose, from FS three children born Perth, 41 and 51 living Dundee.

Thank you everyone very much. I am just following through, researching each lead. I am waiting on some information from overseas and I've ordered in a book with info on Macmillan Brown but at this stage, I'm not sure he is ours.
I have established with certainty that our James married Elizabeth Watts in 1814. She kindly kept the name Watts all through her life, so that was very helpful; and currently am following their lives at death when they lived at Craigie near Dundee.

I don't know anything about Elizabeth Watts except that she died 1873 8th January and was born in Montrose either 1784 or 1791 (as on census).

I can only find the 3 children though and at this stage I haven't been able to find them to follow their lives through.
George died young but presumably the girls married.   Many thanks to everyone.

Hi Dod,
Yes, that looks very promising. and the address is correct, I researched it yesterday on the old maps.
on the death notice 1873 (Dundee Courier) Elizabeths age is 89 years - so born 1784 - but on the earlier census she is b 1791. I checked the IGI index and more likely is 1790 as that is the only Elizabeth Watts born Craig by Montrose and also Montrose at that period.

Thank you kindly.
