marriage of Donald McDonald and Christie McCorquodale
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 20:35 GMT (UK) »
I have searched for their marriage for several years. On familysearch.org I found baptisms for their children in Lismore: Hugh 20 Oct 1805, Christie 18 Feb 1808, Elizabeth 30 Jul 1817, Duncan 5 Mar 1820 and Donald 9 Jun 1822. They were on the 1841 census in Duror. Can anyone help me find their marriage?
Kind regards, Nan

Hi Nan,

The closest record on SP is:
27/04/1800   MCCORQUODALE   CHRISTIE   DONALD MCKELLACH/FR354 (FR354)   F   LISMORE APPIN AND DUROR   /ARGYLL   525/00 0010 0355

Everything seems to fit except Donald's recorded surname?

That looks very likely, Br1gau  :)

I tend to go all glassy eyed on the issue of Clans and septs and the like, however, I think McKelloch may be a sept of M(a)cDonald (as was MacIsaac in my line). See www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp/s.MacDonald/qx/clanbadge_details.htm

My MacIsaacs went by the surname of MacDonald by the mid 1800s.

Thanks Monica, that's very new to me so well worth bearing in mind when I'm next looking for McDonalds ;)  I thought McKellach may just be a mis-transcription, but certainly there is no other 'ch mccorquodale' (using soundtex), spouse 'donald' coming up anywhere in Scotland between 1785 and 1805.

Thank you Br1gau and Monica. I did see a marriage with Donald McKellach on SP but disregarded it. Monica it was interesting to read about the septs. I had heard of them before but didn't realize that some individuals changed their sept surname to the clan surname. Without the help of you two I would never have found the marriage of Chsitie and Donald.

Monica, how did you know that your MacIsaacs had changed their name to MacDonald? Is there a list/source anywhere that has a record of these name changes?

Not really Nan. My MacIsaac family was from the Moidart area. Roman Catholic so I pick up on records really from the first census in 1841 and early statutory registrations. In these, for this period of around 15-20 years, they showed as for example, 'Ronald MacIsaac or MacDonald', written this way. By the early 1860s onwards, they went only by the name of MacDonald.

An example. This is the death entry at the grand age of 93 of Ranald MacDonald, my 5xgrandfather (no mention by now of the MacIsaac surname) in 1872. He shows as MacDonald by now as does his wife who predeceased him, Ann MacDonald.....except I couldn't find any trace of an Ann MacDonald for Ranald's wife. All their children's deaths showed mother as Ann MCVARISH. Yep, this was also a name change around that same period of the mid 1850s. The surname McVarish became fairly rare around this period and pretty much died out from what I found. Guess most of them became MacDonalds in the generations that followed!

This one is a little later than I mentally remembered, from 1888, the death of my 4xgrandmother, with the reference to husband Angus as MacDonald or MacIsaac. I'll stop there! Hopefully, the two examples give you an idea of what I meant.
