Agnes Johnston 1863
« on: Wednesday 08 January 14 22:15 GMT (UK) »
I have everything about Agnes Johnston born Innerleithen 1863, daughter of James Johnston and Mary Ballantyne, except for her whereabouts on the 1891 census.

On the 1881 census she was with her parents, sister Mary and 2 nephews in Selkirk.

In 1891 James and Mary Ballantyne were in Hawick, alone. This is where Agnes met her husband in 1892 ,but I am just looking for that one last bit  ( 1891 ) of information on her.

Thanks

Not unusual for a spinster woman to knock a few years from her age.

Agnes Johnston age 30 born Scotland 1861  Cook Domestic Servant.

Address Ilderton House, Ilderton Village, Ilderton.

Reg. Dis. Glendale Northumberland England.

Piece 4271, Folio 34, Page 4.

Head of house William Hindmarsh  born 1845 Farmer.

This is not far from Scottish Borders.

Thankyou for your reply

I omitted to say that I know about this one.; it doesn`t help where it only says Scotland for birthplace.

I`m pretty sure it`s not her as my Agnes would only have been 27 at time of the census, so while they knocked off some years sometime, I`m not sure she would have added 3 !!!!!!!!

I have sometimes found on SP that you have to search for other members of the family in order to find the missing person, but in this case I haven`t managed to find her.

To correct myself my first post should read James and Mary Johnston were in Hawick in1901

Thanks for your help

Hi BillyF,

Do you mean that not only can't you find Agnes on the 1891 but also her parents?

Looby :)

Thank you Looby

I have her parents in 1891. It`s just that I am missing only Agnes and only in 1891; I have all her other censuses, plus marriage, plus herchild, plus death

Thanks BillyF,

Have you ruled out the Agness Johnston in Lanarkshire on the 1891?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KS63-3JT

Unfortunately, you'll have to look her up on Scotlands People to confirm (if you haven't already).
This woman was born in Peebleshire, but unfortunately Family Search doesn't record where or if she's a married or single woman.
Good luck with the hunt,
Looby :)

Thanks for that.

I will look her up on SP with the spelling of Agness. I hadn`t considered a variation of her first name !! All the other records I have on her, it is spelt correctly !

How the plot thickens !!

I`ve just looked at the Ilderton Census, thanks for giving me William Hindmarsh by the way, as Agnes was proving to be like looking for a needle in a haystack .

The surprising thing is that also in the same house was Catherine Donoghue aged 25; at this time Agnes had yet to marry, but one of her sister-in-laws -to -be married a John Donoghue !!

Now going to check the Donoghue link.

Thanks both of you

Sorry, I meant to say the census only shows Scotland for Agnes.
