St Mochua's graveyard, Celbridge
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 18:25 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Wondering if anyone would be located near St Mochua's graveyard in Celbridge and be able to see if there are some of my relatives buried there?

I was told that members of the Mervyn family were buried there, along with members of the Maunsell family, who lived at Oakly/Oakley Park. My great great grandfather William Mervyn worked there. Any Mervyn deaths pertaining to me would have been circa 1860-1890.

Hoping someone can help.
Thanks,
DM

Thanks very much AM,

That's really kind of you and there's no rush. Next week would be great.

DM

I only know of one Mervyn who died in the town:

Bridget Dunne or Mervyn (died Celbridge, 1876), my great great grandmother.

But there very well might be others. She and William had 11/12 children, possibly more.

William worked as a lodge keeper at Oakly Park/Oakley Park in Celbridge, during the time of the Maunsells.

I asked St. John of God's, who are on site there now, about possible records and they found the following extract:

The Maunsell Family were owners of Oakly Park House for 111 years from 1813, and assumed responsibility for the historic graveyard with its old church, St. Mochua's Church, and magnificent Conolly Mausoleum (now vested in Kildare County Council).

The Maunsell family are buried in this graveyard as well as many other families, including the Mervyn family.

DM,

I found the cemetery lastnight (after asking about 15 people who had never heard of the cemetery) anyway the problem is it was locked up and you cannot get into the cemetery... (big walls and big gates)

I will have to ring around and see who has the keys to the cemetery. The cemetery is very old so I will try and transcribe the headstones but not promising very much.

Thanks very much Ann Marie,

Sorry to hear about your wasted trip. Pity there was no information on the gates or nearby about the cemetery, it must be very old - as you describe.

Keep me posted if you hear anything about sourcing the keys!

Much appreciated,
Dave

Hi Ann Marie,

Any word on whether you might be able to get the keys for the graveyard?

I managed to find this info about it:
