Ruskies Scavenger Hunt...Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 10:11 BST (UK) »
Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt, it's a little long and looks convoluted, but I'm sure you'll get your teeth stuck into it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                                     *************************

I am searching for Georgina Bird and her father’s family. Firstly, apologies for the lengthy post.

From birth certificate:
Georgina Byrd born 21 Sept 1891 13a Archer’s Tce, Smithdown Lane USD West Derby (Liverpool).
Father: George Byrd
Occupation: Corporation Labourer
Mother: Mary Jane Byrd formerly Griffiths
(I have successfully traced Mary Jane’s family).

From marriage certificate:
Georgena Baird age 26 marries William Wright age 24 on January 9th 1918
St Catherine’s Church Edge Hill Liverpool
Georgena and William both resided at 80 Lovat Street at time of marriage.
Her father: George Baird, occupation labourer
Wit: Joseph Herbert Hoskisson and Margaret Pearson
(all signed)
(I have successfully traced Georgina and William’s family forward, much of which is within living memory of relatives).

I cannot find Georgina on the 1901 or 1911 census with parents or alone.

Marriage certificate of Georgina’s parents:
15 Jan 1882 St Nicholas Church Liverpool
George Bird age 22 (b 1860) bachelor, married Mary Jane Griffiths age 23, (b 1859) spinster. George is a labourer. His father is William Bird, occupation Porter.
Both signed
Wit: Frederick and Harriet Cross (both made their marks)

This is the only possible glimmer of Georgina in the census before her marriage:
1901 RG13/3496/142/44
Barcroft Street, West Derby
2 House, 10 Crt
James Bird 35 dock lab b Lancs Manchester
Mary J 36 b Liverpool
Margaret 13
Georgina 10
Thomas 6
James 1

As James is NOT her father I suppose it is possible that it could simply be an enumerator error and James should be George.

As the 1891 census was taken on 5th April and Georgina was born in September she won’t appear on the 1891, however IF this is the correct family then Margaret b 1888 should appear, but I cannot see her with parents James and Mary J or George and Mary J in the 1891 census.

Going back a bit there is this family with son George and father William:

1881
43 Highgate St East Side, W Derby, Liverpool
RG11/3710/96/39
William Bird 69 porter b Nfk Parwich
Harriet 55 b Shrop Newport
Geres[sic] son 19 porter W Derby (I reckon this should be George)

1871
58 Highgate St
West Derby
RG10/3845/110/31
William Bird 59 pensioner and porter b Nfk Norwich
Harriet wife 40 keeps a mangle b Salop Newport
George 9 scholar b Lancs Liverpool (the James in the 1891 says he is b Manchester)

1861
2 Back Bolton St
W. Derby
RG9/2733/15/23
Liverpool
William Bird 48 dock porter b Norwich
Harriet 35 b Newport Shropshire

Cannot find in 1851.
Cannot narrow down the family in 1841.

Now this certainly seems to be the same family through the censuses, but is this the correct William, father of George, grandfather of Georgina? How can I prove this is the right (or wrong) family?

Can anyone see a likely birth for George in Lancashire?

Can anyone see a likely marriage for William Bird and Harriet, presumably in Shropshire?

An additional point, I believe Georgina was also known as Ena.

I have several old requests about the same family on rootschat. The most relevant are:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,202448.0.html
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,184559.0.html

To follow up on some of the points raised in the previous rootschat topics:
Georgina never spoke of siblings.
There was no talk of any remarriages.
Both the birth and marriage certificates I posted above are the correct ones as family members have Georgina’s original copies.
Georgina later preferred to call herself Baird rather than Bird, simply because she did not like the surname.

Sorry this is so long winded, but I wanted to include all my findings to save anyone going over old ground.

Do we know when Georgina father died?

added - with the variations in the surname given it sound as if the family originated in Ireland (thats just my thinking)

the 1871 census looks good.

right father

i'd be happy with that one

That's definitely a possibility.  In fact, it's very likely.  Both were quite old for first marriages though... maybe George Bird/Byrd was married previously?
