Nantwich workhouse records
« on: Tuesday 15 July 14 15:54 BST (UK) »
I've just discovered that my ancestors were born in Nantwich workhouse in 1844.  Can anyone tell me if the workhouse records are available to view and if so where.  My great great grandfather's occupation, was said to be a writer.  He was the he father of the twin boys who were born in Nantwich).  Again any ideas anyone regarding what a writer would do in 1844.  Thanks for any help available.

Acccording to http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Nantwich/ records are held by Cheshire Archives and Local Studies Service, Cheshire Record Office, Duke Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1RL. Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1842-1930, with gaps); Register of inmates (1925-49); etc.

Again any ideas anyone regarding what a writer would do in 1844.

It is too vague a description to be sure, he could have been a kind of secretary, or a sign-writer etc.
There are about 21 different kinds of writer in "A Dictionary of Occupational Terms"

See the FamilySearch collection "England, Cheshire Workhouse Records, 1848-1967" on https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1646487 for an index - however, my memory is that little, if anything, survives from Nantwich for that era as far as individuals' details go.

The Nantwich parish registers do contain references to people from the Workhouse.

Thanks for your reply Stan, It doesn't look as though there is anything available for the years I was interested in.  I think there is more information for later dates.I'll continue looking and hopefully something will turn up.

Thanks Adrian , I've already had a look at Family search and it looks as though there are details for later years.  I haven't had a look at the Parish records yet but will keep you informed if I find anything.
