coyle/gallagher
« on: Thursday 12 June 14 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hi
looking for help with tracing my gg grandfather.
James Coyle b 1856 (Ireland) coal miner, known to have lived at 21 Russell St Johnstone at time of his marriage to Mary Ann Gallagher b1860 mill hand, also known to live in Rankin St Johnstone.(Address from marriage cert) 1884.
Mary Anns Parents were also in Scotland and I can only assume she lived with them, although I cant find on census, they were Edward Gallacher( Joiner) and Ann Brown (several different spellings for Gallacher).
James parents were John Coyle and Mary McGee however I don't know anything about them.
Any help would be great. ::)
thanks

Hello Chan01,
Address, 6 Russell Street, Abbey, Renfrew,

This certainly looks like the Coyle's. on the 1881 census.

Mary Coyle, Head, Housekeeper, W. age 47 years, born Ireland,
Richard Coyle, Son, Coal Miner, U. age 34 years, born Ireland,
Francis Boyle, Son, Coal Miner, U. age 31 years, born Ireland,
John Coyle, Son, Shoe Maker ( Operative ) U. age 22 years, born Ireland.

There is a death for a Mary McGee Coyle, 1900. age 66 years, Renfrew, Johnstone.

As you are most likely aware Russell Street, is in Johnstone, Renfrew.

Regards,
Jonn.

The age of son Richard, and Francis, look odd considering Mary, age.

Jackie, I wonder whether this could be the birth of a possible sister to Mary Ann Gallacher https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F55L-RGZ It is the only birth I can see for children with those parents' names.

Might give you clues as to where her family were from in Ireland if correct entry. Official registration of RC BMDs only began from 1864. See for background www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro

Can't really see anything for Mary Ann's parents up to 1881 census. Maybe they didn't come over from Ireland or if they did, in later years?

Is this James and Mary Ann, from 1901 - all the children showing as born in New Monkland:

James Coyle 40 coal miner b. Ireland
Mary Ann Coyle 30 b. Ireland
James Coyle 14
Mary Coyle 12
Ann Coyle 10
Edward Coyle 7
Catherine Coyle 4
William Coyle 1

Address: Smithfield Cottage, New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Must be the right entry. In 1891, Mary Ann's mother is showing as living with them:

James Coyle 36 coal miner b. Ireland
Mary Ann Coyle 26 b. Ireland
James Coyle 4
Mary Coyle 2
Annie Coyle 1 month
Annie Gallocher 50 Mother-in-law, paper mill worker b. Ireland

Address: Caldercruix, Shotts Lanarkshire

Well, that would be her aged c. 1 month! Guess you have the 1891-1911 entries for the family?

With Annie Brown/Gallacher showing in 1891, she could well have died in Scotland and her death cert would confirm her parents' details. The transcript I am looking at does not include marital status so don't know whether she was widowed by 1891.
