Hi ,
Perhaps if you posted the areas of Wigtownshire they lived in e.g Kirkcolm or New Luce someone

on here might be able to help you with schools .

Many thanks for the information. I am looking for records for children born from 1874 to 1893 living in Mochrum, Glasserton and Kirkinner.
I understand they might be held in the Ewart Library in Dumfries or else in Stranraer but not sure who to contact as I wouldn't like to waste a very long journey.
Any help would be appreciated.

Admission registers for Mochrum are held in the Ewart Library in Dumfries, but only begin in 1913 so will be a bit late for your purposes.  There don't appear to be admission registers for Glasserton, only log books which tend not to name children in them, but can give good information about what was going on at the school.  Unfortunately, it looks like only log books survive for Kirkinner too.

If you search on the Scan catalogue at www.scan.org.uk/catalogue for the placenames, you'll be able to see a list of what's available.

All the records noted above are seem to be at the Ewart Library, so it would probably be worth contacting them anyway - their details can be found at http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3780 or by contacting Dumfries & Galloway Archives direct.

School Log Books can be very interesting and worthwhile if you can get the opportunity to read one. I was lucky to find one at Lichfield Archives where my mother was at school. The devastating effects of scarlet fever featured, as did absenteeism through "work"!

When did school attendance become compulsory in Scotland, especially for travellers' families?

Thanks, Monica, I'll look through that link later on this evening.

I hope Auchencrief reads this post too as we are researching some of the same family. :)
