Coopers of Dorset
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 05:21 BST (UK) »
HI,
I am looking for the parents of my ggggrandfather Robert R. Cooper
born April 6, 1807 in  England   Death December 4, 1869 in  Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA
He married Mary Northover on Sept. 28, 1824 in Bridport.
They had the following children: Elizabeth Mary Read Cooper, Ameila Cooper, Henrietta Cooper, Jemima Cooper, William Cooper and Thomas S. Cooper.

I think they left for the United states in 1840.

I believe he may have been baptized on March 27, 1808 at St. Mary's in bridport, dorset????

I would love to find out his parents names and information along with any siblings. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If John Cooper and his wife Elizabeth baptised a second son called Robert in 1811, wouldn't that imply that the Robert baptised in 1808 had died?

FindMyPast has a burial for a Robert Cooper on 24 Oct 1809 at Bridport. It does say age 0, but if it was the child baptised in March 1808, he would be between 1 and 2. However it does depend what the actual record says (image not available from FindMyPast). Often it just says infant, which is usually interpreted as less than 1 year old, but it could be used a bit more loosely for a young child.

Have just found same records on Ancestry with images. The 1809 burial record records Robert as "infant" not specifying actual age and says he is of Allington (a separate parish but which forms part of the borough of Bridport). The marriage record of Robert Cooper and Mary Northover also says Robert is of the parish of Allington. But this means that was his abode prior to marriage and does not necessarily mean he was born there. Mary is of the parish of St Marys Bridport. Both Robert and Mary were able to sign there names, as were their witnesses: John Edwards and what looks like Mary Young. John Curme is an additional witness but he seems to have witnessed all the marriages around that time so possibly parish clerk or similar official.
