Hi,
I'm trying to find some more-definitive-than-I-have information on Mary Ann Barkell, of Cornwall, regarding her birth and marriage. What I definitely have is-
.married Edward Holman in the last quarter 1860, Redruth, Cornwall (UK freeBDM)
.1861 census living in Gwinnear as a dressmaker, husband Edward a copper miner
.daughter Eliza born 1st quarter 1863. On 18 Jun 1863 the 1900ton ship Accrington sailed from London to Lyttelton, New Zealand, under Cpt Christie, docked 5 Sept 1863. Eliza died late 1863 in New Zealand. The couple then moved on to Australia, where they had another 8 children.
.from records (census, death, passenger manifest) Mary Anne Holman nee Barkell (have also seen Barkill, Bartell and Bartle) was born about 1837 in St Austell. One son and several grandsons carry the name "Barkell", but I admit I have seen all the above in birth registries, etc.
.father's name on the death record (1918, Berringa, Victoria, Australia) is William, but this is not necessarily the case, of course. With three-quarters of my ancestors on the Victorian goldfields and most of them never having met their grandparents, the commonest name on the death records I've come across is "Unknown". BTW, mother's name on the death entry is..."Unkn".
I've seen, often quoted, the following:
birth: 28 March 1837 , St. Austell, Cornwall, England
christening: 15 June 1837 Bethel Chapel, St. Austell, Cornwall, England
father: John Hockin Barkle mother: Sarah Sandercock
married: Edward Holman 1860 27 Dec Cornwall, England Wesleyan Chapel
but this is never cited/sourced. The IGI data I can find is contributed, and online searches aren't finding anything else - except people assigning "different" Mary (Ann) Bartell/Barkell data to Edward Holman's wife.
Can anyone verify the above information? I think Bethel Chapel is Methodist, am I right? If anyone could sight - and/or cite! - records, or point me to something online, I'ld love to hear it! (Dreaming of a marriage record with name of all parties' parents, and birthplaces, which correspond beautifully...
)
Many thanks Maryanne
