Colin,

This is the Scotsman pay site. Just the number easily finds the 12 December, 1917, entry. http://archive.scotsman.com/search/results?basicsearch=13856

But you may be able to get access for free if your library subscribes. If you live in Scotland try here. https://auth.nls.uk/ldc/browse.cfm?by=subject&sid=99

Here’s the newspaper image. http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s445/Tyrannosaurus12/Scotsman12Dec1917_zps273c7ea6.jpg

There’s an A. Baird KOSB killed at the top of the same list whose next-of-kin lived in Stirling. (Andrew). Is there any chance that Baird is the one, or do you know for certain that he was a Robert.

Almost all the KOSB killed on that list have a death date of 8 November on CWGC. Presumably the wounded would be about the same.

David Alexander may have been wounded more than once but the newspaper print quality on the other occasion was not good enough for the computer to correctly convert the image.

This looks like him, a lot closer to the death of Robert Baird, except the number is jumbled. In the Glasgow Herald it looks more like 13586.

The Scotsman, 29 Sep 1916
WOUNDED.
King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander, 13585, D. (Falkirk)

2nd Batt KOSB.

Can anyone help with my great uncle, Joseph Edwards. who was killed 18 Nov 1914, while serving with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in France. His service number was 11553.
I am trying to find out if he was in the KOSB before the war broke out. I have him in Liverpool on the 1901 census, aged 7 but I can't find him on the 1911 census.
Any help would be much appreciated.

His number suggests he joined in 1913 - May/June.

Very few without pre-war service were sent to France in 1914, and those that were had specialist skills (medics, drivers, mechanics, etc) and weren't there as infantry.

That's brilliant, thanks. So now I need to find him on the 1911 census if he wasn't in the army then.
Thanks for your help.
