Military Record
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 10:16 BST (UK) »
Hello.

Wondering if anyone can decipher or make sense of this extract of a service record from WW1.

I can read most of it but I'm not sure what some of it means. Sadly it was poor quality but I've enhanced it as best I can.

Regards Eric

D.A.G was the Adjutant General's Office & was the personnel dept. for the Army. Instead of going on the Z list as most soldiers did after the war he's put on standby to be shipped out to Russia as part of the international force supporting the white Russians against the Bolsheviks.
The next entry which should have been first is him being given leave by his Corps commander.
So instead of going back to his Coy. after his leave is up he's kept in the UK.

Hi Jim

Many thanks.

So does that mean that the line below 'Retained in the UK' says 'Duty in Russia'.
I thought it may have said 'Baby in Russia'

I thought it may have said 'baby' as he did have a daughter born in Russia in 1911. I then began to wonder if there was a bit more to this man.

Could it be that he was sent to Russia because of his knowledge of the country and it's language?

He would have been sent as part of a Brigade (or to join a Brigade) which included his Corps whatever that was.
There would have been officers who had a comprehensive knowledge of Russia because of Britain's close ties with the Tsar.
On saying that there doesn't appear to have been much communication with the Russians & therefore Britain's involvement was considered a failure & they withdrew late 1919.
No medals were struck is it's oft referred to as the forgotten war or Churchill's war.

Maybe I've just got a suspicious mind.

This bloke enlisted  in Jan 1918. He was 35 and a Company Director and Accountant. He ended up with the Signals as a Sapper. With already having had some involvement with Russia it just made me wonder. Sadly, I don't know why he was in Russia in 1910/1911.

There were a lot of Brits in Russia doing business & also living there.
Hell of a scramble to get out when the Red Army arrived.
What was he a director of?

I've no idea who he worked for.

I've only just discovered the Russian connection. There was no trace of him on the 1911 and I only came across his Army Record by chance, which showed the birth of a daughter in Russia in Jan 1911.

I was very surprised to find he had enlisted
