KELLY / CAMPBELL Kells
« on: Friday 17 March 06 05:12 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on Robert KELLY, cattle-dealer and his wife Margaret CAMPBELL, born around 1790. Their son, James KELLY (1814 - 1904) was my gt gt gt grandfather and was born in Kells. James moved to Barr, Ayrshire. He was a shepherd. He married Agnes Reid in 1846.

Thank you.

Hi VJames

Do you know if the family were still in the Dumfries & Galloway area in 1851?
If they were have you looked at the free access 1851 census made available by the local Family History Society there?

dumgal.gov.uk

As well as having lots of links and local interest  things their census pages allow you to check whether they were still within that area even if they moved to another parish.

I recall that I have some Kelly in-laws around that time living in the parish due south of Kells - ? Kirkmichael. I'll dig out my info on them and have a look.
My g g g grandfather, James Burgess, was a tenant farmer there and Parton and talks about buying/selling cattle from a dealer in one of his letters. I'll check that out too.

Hi again
I've checked my files. There certainly was a Kelly family in the area. I have a Hamilton Kelly marrying Esther Carson in the before 1817. Their children were baptised Balmaghie - just east of Kells - and Crossmichael to the south of Kells (I wrongly called it Kirkmichael above).
I can't find any marriage for your Robert and Margaret.
One thing that you might consider is that this area was on the droving route between Ireland and England. Kelly certainly seems Irish. My Carsons are possibly Irish and, so far,  I've traced them to Wigtown.
Sorry not to come up with anything more positive.

Hi Gadget,
Actually your comment about the droving route is very interesting. I didn't know about this route and will now look into it further because as you say, Kelly does sound Irish and I've always thought it would take me back to Ireland eventually.

Dear Val,

It seems we may share a gt gt gt grandfather! I'm just piecing together family tree information I've inherited from my own parents and a little Google search for James Kelly in Kells turned up your message. The information I had (James moving to Barr) matches what I had from my parents' search, so it certainly seems to concur.

I'm based in England, but my mum and dad are still in Scotland. I'm hoping to piece together a few more pieces of the puzzle. Perhaps we can share notes…

Unfortunately I don't have much more information at present about Robert Kelly.

Hi Mike,
I have an abundance of information on Ancestry.co.uk. You might like to check there and then we can share more and communicate personally.
