Girthon Churchyard & William Galloway
« on: Friday 15 January 10 09:22 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for anyone with access to Grthon Churchyard who may be able to find out what happened to William Galloway born 1799 to Alexander Galloway and Mary McNish. I can find no record of him after his birth. The Galloways were farmers at Culreoch.

If no one comes forward to help, there are books of Kircudbright inscriptions pre 1855 available from Dumfries.
They come in 7 volumes, I have volume 7 because that contains Kirkbean, the place I am interested in. Old Girthon & Girthon yards are in volume 3.

James.

Hi Algall

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I've just checked the Girthon and Old Girthon MIs but I can't find a mention of William Galloway or his parents, Alexander Galloway  and Mary McNish.

Sorry.

I knew that name rang a bell, I read it when hunting for some of my Galloways in Wigtownshire.

Mary died in 1843. She is listed under Galloway/Nish.

Hi Kirsty

Something very  strange with the dates though - it says that she was 36 in 1843 which means that she was born after she should have had William in 1799.

So which is correct - the birthdate of William or the age of Mary  :-\

Alexander died in 1834. His will is on Scotland's People.

FARMER, IN CULREOCH, WIFE MARY GALLOWAY Ref SC16/41/8

A William Galloway died 1822. He may not be the son, but father or borther of Alexander.

FARMER IN CULREOCH, PARISH OF GIRTHON  Ref CC13/4/3
FARMER IN CULROACH (CULREOCH), PARISH OF GIRTHON. Ref CC13/3/2

Gadget you are correct.

I think the Mary who died in 1843 is actually the daughter of Alexander Galloway and Mary McNish who was born in January 1807 Girthon (from IGI).

I find it strange that they aren't in the Girthon MIs as they seem to be reasonably well off. I'm wondering if they were buried elsewhere  :-\

Is there any information about the birthplaces of the parents -  Mary and Alexander?

The will would possibly indicate if William (1799) survived his father.

Hi All
Firstly a big thanks to Mosstrooper, Gadget and KistyG for the information, much of which I have, but has taken me months to find. You are all so much better than I am at finding the links.
Please let me explain why I am interested in this family:- I can trace my paternal line directly to William Galloway a weaver who died in Mouswald in 1870. His death certificate says he was 75 and his parents were unknown. The informant was the inspector of poor.
The 1861 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 56 born in Kirkcudbright.
The 1851 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 50 born in Kirkcudbright.
The 1841 Census shows him in Mouswald as a lodger age 45
A search on Scotland’s people for a William Galloway born in Kirkcudbrightshire over a range of possible dates only shows only one, born to Alexander Galloway and Mary McNish.
I know it’s a longshot! As I cannot prove this link I decided to try to disprove it by seeing if William died in infancy or childhood. Hence my original posting.
The Galloways of Culreoch were an extended family of farmers, hence the confusion over names. Alexander did have a brother called William and both there wills are on S/P. add to this William has two wills.
They were a wealthy lot and in Alexanders will there is no mention of his son William and he dissatisfied with his son Alexanders conduct.
Is it possible that William fell out with his father and left home at an early age to move to Mouswald and become a weaver?
But where are all the Galloways of Girthon parish buried?
Any help or suggestions would be welcome.
