Clark-Kerr Family 1800's Lochrutton
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My husband's gr.gr. grandparents were David Clark (b. 1811 Urr) and Isabella Kerr (b. 1804 Annan, Dumfrieshire, d. May 28, 1853 Lochfoot).  Known children include Margaret Hyslop Clark b. 1837; Robert 1841, Andrew b. abt. 1842 and Thomas.

They lived in Lochfoot during the mid to late 1800's where David was a stockingmaker according to census records.  Robert, my husband's gr. grandfather, eventually left Scotland and worked as a traveling draper in England moving frequently from one community to another.

I wonder if anyone recognizes the David Clark family and connects to it.  Also, since Isabella Kerr Clark was probably buried in the Lochfoot cemetery, can someone locate her tombstone there?  It is possible that other family members are buried with her.
We live in the US and are not familiar with local cemeteries.  Would appreciate any help very much.  Thank you in advance.  Anne

Hi,

The Pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions for Lockrutton (Lockfoot is the nearby village ) has the
following headstone inscription.......
No 46
David CLARK 20.7.1886,76, w Isabella KERR d Lochfoot 28.5.
1853  49, gda Jemima 2.2. 1885  14. Isabella CLARK d Carslwith
27. 1 1895   35, h David Whan.  Agnes Jane CLARK d Lockfoot
26. 11 1898  21. Margt CLARK  " his da"  d Lockfoot 24.10.1915  76.

The inscriptions are recorded as laid out above & were not recorded verbatim.
The full details would be along the lines of.......

David Clark died 20 July 1886 age 76 years.
His wife Isabella Kerr died at Lockfoot 28 May 1853 age 49 years,
Their Grand-daughter Jemima died 2 February 1885 aged 14 years,
Their daughter Agnes Jane Clark died Lockfoot 26 November 1898 age 21 years,
Margaret Clark " his daughter " died Lockfoot 24 October 1915 age 76 years.
Daughter Isabella Clark died Carslwith 27 January 1895 age 35 years (her husband David Whan)

No sign of any of their sons.If no one can get you a photograph of the headstone before,I will be returning to the area in the spring of next year and will do so then.Rgds Matt

Hello Matt,

Thank you so much for this wonderful information!  It is impossible for me to obtain it without assistance in your area.  If you or someone else could obtain photos of their headstones in the future, we would be delighted.

  Sincerely, Anne in North  Carolina

Hello again, Matt,

I have tried to locate Carslwith on the internet using Google but am not able to find it.  Could you tell me where this town is located?

Also, I wonder if there are some errors in the pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions for Agnes Jane and Isabella Clark.  They could not have been daughters of David and Isabella Clark as they were born after 1853 when Isabella Kerr Clark died.  According to my calculations, Agnes Jane was born ca. 1877 and Isabella was born ca. 1860.  In the 1861 census, Margaret Clark, the daughter of David and Isabella Kerr Clark, was living with Isabella age 1 yr.

In the 1881 census for Lochfoot, Jemima age 9 yrs. and Agnes Jane age 4 yrs. are listed as grand daughters of David Clark.  David age 68 yrs. is head of the household and Margaret, age 44 yrs. is with her children.

So, I believe that Isabella, Jemima and Agnes Jane are all daughters of Margaret Clark.  Is it common to find errors in the Pre 1855 Monument Inscriptions?  Are they transcribed in a compiled book?

Thanks again for your help!  Anne

Hi,
Carslwith is a typo error on my part, is should read Carsluith.I believe that Carsluith is a small collection of properties situated south of Creetown located on the A75.
I should have also entered Grand in respect of the entry for Agnes Jane Clark. So I would go along with  you that the children are those of Margaret.
Had a few credits left for Scotlands People & just had a look. Jemima was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Clark & was born at Lockfoot on 17 May 1871.
Q...Is it common to find errors in the Pre 1855 Monument Inscriptions?  Are they transcribed in a compiled book?

A...Yes there are a few errors in the MI's, but todays errors are due to me not paying attention. The MI's for Kirkcudbrightshire are in a collection of 7 booklets. I do not think that they are available on line.
