1851 Lookup Please.
« on: Wednesday 29 August 12 14:10 BST (UK) »
Hi All.
Could some kind person please lookup the 1851 census for Kirkcudbrightshire for a Thomas and Fanny Hairstens (nee Burgess), Thomas was born about 1819 in Kirkcudbright and Fanny was born about 1821 in Dumfries. I am hoping to find out Thomas's occupation and who the other members of the household were. Any help will be really appreciated.
Regards Dave.

Hi,

Try this site for the 1851 census for Dumfries & Galloway where you will find them.

Dave, these look to be some of their children which might help with finding the family in the 1851 census - www.rootschat.com/links/0qjm/

Monica  :)

Added: Just found on another transcript:

Thomas Haustein 32, farm labourer b. Troqueer
Fanny Haustein 31 b. Dumfries
Margaret Haustein 10 b. Troqueer

Address: 4 Mitchells Lane, Maxwelltown, Troqueer

Maybe their other two children died young?  :-\

Hi MonicaL.
Thank you very much for your reply.
It would appear that their children John and Agnes died very young, I think also that their mother Fanny must have died between 1851 and 1861 has she does not seem to be on the 1861 census anywhere. On the 1861 census for Troqueer there appears to be a Thomas Hairsttens( note spelling) of the correct age, could you please possibly check this for me. Once again many thanks.
Dave.

Dave, the quality of the transcript I have looking at for 1861 is not great and some bits don't make sense.

Thomas Hairstens, 27, boarder, Maxwellton, kirkcudbt. Occupation down as 'Tenbente'  ???  He is boarding with a Grierson family at Orroland Farmhouse, Rerrick.

Likely you would need to check the original image to check on accuracy of his age etc on the transcript above. Also, his marital status would help you from there.

Young Margaret I think is working in 1861 as shown here:

Margaret Haerstem, 19, domestic servant, b. Maxwelltown. Working at the Hutchison household at 4 Terregles Street, Troqueer.

If Agnes did die young, could Thomas have remarried?

I saw this entry in 1871 - everyone born in Troqueer except Mary mother:

Thomas Hairstens 55, gardener
Mary Hairstens 42 b. Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire
John Hairstens 13
Thom Hairstens 10
Mary Hairstens 5
Joseph Hairstens 4

Address: 2 Church St, Maxwelltown

Some birth entries here showing mother as Mary Clark www.rootschat.com/links/0qjw/

Marriage here in 1860 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTR7-6HC

Found this very old post here on RC on the family of the Thomas and Mary I have mentioned in the last two posts.

Gadget did a lot of work on this family. From what was found then, Thomas who married Mary did show as a widower on his 1860 marriage which is promising.

Also, found on that post is Thomas, wife Mary and young John. I'll leave you to read it through and see what you think.... www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,164078.0.html

Hi MonicaL.
I did  free search on S.P and found a death for a Fanny Hairsteens in 1857 at Troqueer so I think that Thomas did remarry to Mary Clark in 1860. Thomas and Fanny's daughter Margaret married a John McBurnie in 1861 at Troqueer whom I have got on later censuses. Thanks for all your help on this post, I really appreciate it.
Regards Dave.
