Baby death in Kirkcudbright
« on: Friday 21 February 14 07:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a baby boy, William born to James & Mary Beattie on 18.4.1861 in Fleet St. I have the B/C.
He was their 10th child. I cannot find a death for him nor a mention of him in the 1861/71 census.
Would they have had to register the death?  I have death certs for all their other children.
James Beattie died in Oct. 1862 and Mary remarried in Nov. 1863. Surname of Milligan.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ,

I think the date for the 1861 Census was the 7th of April , if William was born on the 18th of April he would have missed it.

Thankyou Ev.  I suspected that could be one reason.

If any of his older siblings were married, could he have been living with them instead? Perhaps when Mary remarried, her new husband had no wish to 'take on' an infant.

Yes Scotmum, this may have been the case. When Mary remarried she was 46 and her husband was 73. I am sure that he was giving her the support she needed with a young family and another tiny babe would have been hard for them, who was 2 years by then.
Tomorrow morning I hope to go down these avenues and peruse all the census sheets I have. Would like to find wee William if I can.
Thanks again and will let you know of any progress.

Annette, if you have a birth cert, there will be a death registration to correspond. It is only in the case of stillborns that there was no birth registration at this time. Registrations for stillbirths only started in Scotland from 1939. This doesn't apply here, you have a birth cert.

Added: There is one Beattie death for a child born in 1861. The death is in 1861 in Anworth, which is the district baby William was born in. I haven't looked at the search result but if you put W* for first name it comes up negative. Not sure if this indicates an index problem or if it is another baby.

Thankyou Monica.  I have found the Death notice you mentioned. Found it but only if I left the Christian name off.
Now comes the result.  The baby William died 29.9.1861, 7hrs old in Anwoth. Now comes the crazy result because William was born to the daughter of Mary.  Her name was Janet, who was Mary's first born in 1839. A premature birth with no assistance. So sad.
So now I am back to square 1. I guess I will keep looking for William although he does not seem to have been looked after by family.
Thankyou for solving 1 of my queries.
