Charters Monument, Kirk Road, parish of Balmaghie
« on: Thursday 03 April 14 23:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have located a monument to the Charters family (on Laurieston maps), adjacent to Morrison (farm) on Kirk Road, to the East of Dornell Loch, Kirkcudbrightshire.  Can you suggest a way that I might get hold of an image of the monument or just the inscription?
Hope you can help.
Regards
Hendo

Hi Matt
Thanks for the help with this.  If you could take a photo of the inscription/monument it would be great.  The Charters family has a very long history with the Balmaghie parish; I have been able to track back to the 1506 & the purchase of land (Duchrae).  There is also mention of John Charters (c 1809) at Morrison farm in the 1871 Balmaghie census (148 acres).  The monument appears to be on this land, further to the east.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi 'clwyd2'
Thanks for the grave stone pic of Alexander Charters (c1809-1890; if my interpretation is correct).  I haven't been able to make a connection with any Charters/Charteris family in Twynholm as yet.  According to the MIs for Twynholm, the only other Charters listed is Grace Charters (c1784- 1871), the wife of James McKie who died at Doon Cottage in Twynholm.

Hi Rob,
In Scotland at the moment. Have been to the area & found the farm which is now a holiday home.
After climbing over some barbwire fences & up a hill I found the monument. about 12 ft high & 4 sides. No inscription and now well hidden from the road by gorse. Took a large number of photos of it,the farmhouse and general area. Went to the church yard which was closeby took pics of all headstone I could find with the name Charters.
Will be home Saturday & will forward all to you then.
Rgds Matt

Thanks Matt
You're a legend.  I appreciate all that you have done and I look forward to seeing your handiwork.  I am currently writing the family history (for my son & his offspring) & this will make an exciting anecdote to include in the Chartres chapter.  No names, no pack drill, of course!
Cheers
