Westmorland -Barnes
« on: Friday 14 April 06 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have still lost Mark Barnes..he seems to have vanished!!  ???

Last found in the 1861 census living at Beckside, Durham and Staindrop
aged 31 brn 1830 married to Elizabeth aged 23 with their son William and mother-in-law Mary Dixon.

the only Barnes I can find in 1851 ia a William Barnes aged 22 brn 1829 Warcop, Westmorland - right age wrong first name, right surname

Any suggestions would be most welcome

Thanks
K

Have you got his marriage certificate?   That will give his father's name and double your chance of finding them in 1851 and 1841.    Brackenber is a very small hamlet near Appleby - quite isolated out on the fell - on the Appleby golf course now.   It would have had a tiny population.

Hi Sill

No.... no marriage certificate.. will have to have to try an educated guess and trawl through the marriage records I think...

have been given a christening date...
Mark Barnes  christening 15 Nov 1829  father Thomas Barnes family mother Mary

I have also been given this by some one who looked for me:
This is the only Mark in the whole of Westmorland 1841
Thomas Barns 50 ag lab
Margaret 44
MARK 11
Nancy 8
Margaret 5
address Scattergate Colby Laithe
all born in county

from the christening info...the mothers are different..but everything else is the same ....and still can't find anything in 1851 on both surname variations :(  ???

nice to find where Brackenber was.. ironic but dad was very involved with golf....he would be very pleased that his ancestors had been replaced by a golf course.....is there any where I can get a map so I can see where these places are?  Is Brackenber near to Scattergate

thanks
K

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WES/Appleby/index.htm    Genuki is always a good place to start.
Shows a small map but you should be able to pinpoint the places absolutely on other online maps.   I have the two and a half inch OS Explorer map number 19 of the Howgills.    Colby is to the west of Appleby.   Brackenber to the east.  Scattergate appears to be within Appleby.  All an easy walk in those days.
I am not sure where you live but you need to search the parish records - you can get the film from your local LDS centre - worldwide and listed on family search - or at the Kendal Record Office or in London.   You may find the marriage and other children and it may give addresses.    If you have access to ancestry then start searching the whole of the Appleby area in 1851 - just trawl through the film rather than looking for a name.    He may be listed under Marcus - they were interchangeable in those days.    Mark's marriage will be on there too.   Start at the first child and work back.  You know her name is Dixon so you are half way there.
Good luck
Andrea
Have you tried the local family history society?

Thanks for this info Andrea,

Am in Bristol so bound to be something here.  Have access to ancestry so will have a look.  Will get there in the end - Did find a Thonmas Barns listed as a farne on the hidtory & directory 1829 of Westmorland - he was in Hilton then.

Will go find a map as well as it makes a lot more sense when you can see how far away the places are.

Thanks again
