Marriage and baptism of John Cripps
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello
After some very useful help I received from members on Rootschat earlier this year, I've decided to ask for some more help to try and find the marriage and baptism of John Cripps (late of Buckland, Berks). I believe he married Isabella ... around 1650. They had six children (all I've found so far) in Buckland and John died there in the 1680's. Isabella died in 1715 and mentions a few of the children as well as a grandson in her will. I'd also love to locate John's baptism C1630. I would be so grateful to receive any information as I'm not sure where to go from here. I did locate a will for Phillip Cripps (1726) in Buckland but don't know his relationship yet. Would anyone have any idea where the name Isabella may have derived?
Thanks
Lindsay

Thanks Kim.
I feel that they may have married outside of Buckland; at least I hope so as it would seem that the earlier registers for Buckland may not exist for John's baptism and marriage. I wonder whether Phillip, the father of Phillip, could be a brother of my John?
Thanks again,
Lindsay

Have you seen this entry on Family Search -

22 Sep 1653 Radley, Berkshire
John Cripps & Isabell Phelps.

I had to look it up but Radley appears to be only about 15 miles from Buckland, and was probably Isabel's home.

HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Thank you Jill. I had seen this entry and I think you're right; it looks a very likely match. Both Buckland and Bampton (the parish of later Cripps') are quite close. It's a pity that John has not a distinctive Christian name but I'll continue the search for his baptism. Thank you once again for your help.

Hi Lindsay,

I see you have mentioned Bampton. There is this baptism;

St.Mary the Virgin, Bampton.

19-4-1625 John Crips s/o Robert & Kathleen.

No signs of the marriage of Robert & Kathleen in Bampton transcripts.

Thank you very much, Alan. This could well be my John, particularly as it is very close to his likely baptism.I had a feeling he might be a Bampton man and I'll carry on to see if I can locate the parents you mentioned (Robert & Kathleen). I am so appreciative of the help I've received via Rootschat and it has helped my research enormously. I'm in Australia so it has been challenging trying to locate registers etc. Thank you so much again and much success in your own research.

Sorry Alan, I should have mentioned that I had a record from Bampton transcripts for a John Baptised, 27th March 1631. Does that appear in your copies I wonder? Also, if it does, is it possible to separate the correct John from the two possibles?
Regards

Hi Lindsay,

Yes the 2nd John does appear as you list but as the s/o Edwarde - sorry I missed it out.

The only marriage I can find is for a Edmunde Cripps to Agnes Sadler 21-6-1624 Bampton - a
possible as I believe the names were interchangeable.

Not sure how you can separate the families easily.

For burials there are;

Kath Crippes 7-3-1645 (widow)
Edward Crippes  3-4-1679 Weald, h'sh'ld'r (Not sure what the abbreviation stands for)
Kath Cripps 3-3-1636 (child) & 9-10-1637 (wid)
Robert Cripps 31-1-1631 (child)  & 17-5-1657 & 3-1-1666 (inf)
