Hi Monica and Fred,
That's a good find on the 1861 - Adam McNaughton is on the 1851 aged 12 at Old Machar, Aberdeenshire with his family - his father is a William McNaughton a Manager of Carpet Work born Dundonald Ayrshire. His mother is an Elizabeth. This doesn't quite fit with his marriage cert  ???
Looby :)

Looks like his mother was an Elizabeth McLean. There is a birth of a daughter Flora in Old Machar 6th Oct 1855 to a William McNaughton and Elizabeth McLean - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYT3-B7J
I had no joy finding a death for Adam on SP.

That all looks good to me, Looby  :)

Regarding Adam's father William, Carpet v. Carpenter....we would need to look at the originals but likely right entry you have in the census. Maybe writing on the marriage cert was hard to read?

To connect back to the marriage cert and details from there. Wonder if we can find Adam and his sister (from 1861) in Janet in the earlier censuses?

Fred, does not look like Catherine and Adam ever showed up on a census together or had any children either? Maybe he ran off... Can't see a SP death for him. If you have any original censuses for Catherine around this time, did she show as married or widowed?

Looby, this must be the entry you mentioned earlier with all the names we have so far, from 1851:

William Mcnaughton 39
Elizabeth Mcnaughton 38 manager of carpet work b. Dundonald, ayr
Sophia Mcnaughton 17 Kilmarnock, Ayre
Adam Mcnaughton 12 Kilmarnock, Ayre
William Mcnaughton 10 Kilmarnock, Ayre...likely witness to 1864 marriage?
Janet Mcnaughton 7 b. Kilmarnock, Ayre
James Mcnaughton 3
Elizabeth Mcnaughton 1
Primrose Mckinzie 18 servant

Address: 35 Whitehouse Street, Old Marchar, Aberdeenshire

I do think this is Adam's family...but he seems to be truly AWOL  :-\

Hi all,
Yes Monica that is the Cemsus I looked at.
The family are on the 1841 Census at Kilmarnock as McNaught.
Kilmarnock was quite well known during this era for carpet manufacturing so it makes sense that his father could be involved in this work.
I also wondered about Catherine's marital status. I haven't found a death either for Adam. Wonder where he got to??
Looby :)

Thanks for looking Monica and Looby.

Re the marriage and occupation for William - Carpet Weaver   :)

There are some bits I can't read so I will crop a bit and post it.

Parents
William McNaughton & Elizabeth McLean
Marriage 6 Jul 1832  Kilmarnock, Ayr

That looks to be the family as McNAUGHT in Wellbeck street in1841 and Whitehouse street in 1851.

I have not found any children. It seems they divorced but don't know when. This is probably Adam:

Adam McNaughton
Residence Year: 1898
Street address: 31 River N
Residence Place: Norwalk, Connecticut
Occupation: Employee
Publication Title: Norwalk, Connecticut, City Directory, 1898
[Image says his employer is N & F Worsted Mills]

He is 'married' to a Sarah born England but the marriage has not yet been found.

I have the image of 1871 and Catherine is listed as Married. I don't have later images. I'm not too interested in following Adam in USA.

I'm hoping to fill the gaps with Catherine:

1901 census and marriage to William JACK.  So strange because sister Sarah married a William JACK:

[signed] John H. Lochore ?  Minister of the Tabernach, Paisley
[signed] Robert Young, Witness, [signed]  Mary Blackley, Witness
