Mary Hand
« on: Monday 14 October 13 09:26 BST (UK) »
I wondered if anyone could help? Two ancestors of mine called John Bisby and Mary Hand, they were born around the 1690's. I have a marriage for them at Bolton on Dearne Yorkshire, in 1725. Also what I believe are their burial records at Barnbrough. Mary in 1782 and John 1780. I can find no baptism records for either. There are loads of Bisby's at Mexbrough, but no John at that time.
I have based their ages on the burial records and if correct Mary would have been about 31 when she married, so possibly Hand is not her name, if she married before John.
Hand is a strange name and I have looked at other records and found none.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Lizzy.

Lizzie: Have you had a look at Genuki lately?
Got friends transcribing the Mexborough registers from 1560's, worth a look.
(Messaging the team you will get feedback on any issues that may crop up).

They may be have records not freely available elsewear.

Hi Brian thank you for that, it looks like the baptisms I'm looking for are missing anyway.
However, I found a couple of marriages at Mexborough  that I didn't know about. There doesn't seem to be any Hands at all.
Thanks again Lizzy.

Hi Shirl, I hadn't looked at Bolton on Dearne and that's where he and Mary married and their first two sons William and Thomas were baptised.
I can't thank you enough. Lizzy.

The surname Hand is still extant in the Doncaster area. Personally I find all the "body part" surnames a little weird, the weirdest I have seen is that of a butcher in Scarborough "Lung"
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)

Hi there, we are obviously very distant cousins. If you do get the chance to look at the parish records, I would be interested in if there was any clue to Mary Hand. If the burial records have Mary's age right, she would have been 31 when she married, quite late in those days and I wondered if she was a widow, which would explain lack of baptism record.
I thought John Bisby's parent's could be Richard Bisby and Margaret Briggs, but I'm really not sure.
Lizzy.

Hello
I am also related to John Bisby (Born 1699) and Mary Hand (Born 1700) they had Richard, Joseph, Robert, Benjamin, William, Mary and Edward. This is on my Great Nanna's side.
