John Mallison and Rachel Rainey
« on: Monday 07 July 14 22:27 BST (UK) »
I have found a marriage for John Mallison and Rachel Rainey July 9 1741 at Doncaster, there is also a marrage  for the same couple July 4 at Tillington Sussex, I thought the earlier date was probably banns, but they were married by licence .
Does anybody have access to Doncaster records to check the details.
Thank you
Liz

Hi Liz

The transcript of the York Marriage Allegation and Bond is dated July 4 and states that both parties are of Doncaster and that the marriage place is to be Doncaster.  Sometimes an alternate church is named but not in this case. It is possible that one of the parties was originally from Tillington and that details of the Bond were forwarded to the parish of Tillington and noted in the Parish Register. Such information might useful in case of disputes over which parish was responsible if Parish relief was sought.

Thank you Venelow.
Is the York Marriage Allegiance and Bond a prerequisite to getting a licence.

Hi

http://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/

You'll find the intent of the bond license is -Tillington being most likely the parish of birth of the bondsman, who may have resided in Doncaster in 1741 but for legal and church affairs, has to put his parish as his birth parish, in some cases the couple have to marry in the bondsmans birth parish.

http://www.origins.net/help/aboutbo-yorkmarr.aspx

If you purchase a copy of the Bond allegation from Borthwich York Uni, York, it will be a printed form but some do have alot of hand written additional information as well and sometimes not ( a gamble)

The marriage in Doncaster 1741 on original church register, will be listed as a single line entry ( printed boxed entries didn't start to 1754) and in most cases only just name the couple who married, but if one of the couple lived in another parish at the time of marriage license, they may state that parish on the register.

Doncaster Archives have there about 90% of church registers transcribed with all legable/readable info in the register info recorded in book form on shelves by the staff desk, which are easy to find, to answer for a telephone call enquies  (First 10 minutes as below and in link free).

They give you 10 minutes free research in on the telephone and will give you the 1741 marriage church register entry if transcribed, verbally on the telephone and if you ask them to repeat for confirmation. They will repeat.

They charge if the enquiry is by post. (£ 11 plus copy and postage charge)

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thank you dobfarm.
The information was very useful. I have emailed the Borthwick Institute, hopefully they will reply.
