Sorry, it was Morley's sister 'Mrs Radford', not his mother that he named as n-o-k on the attestation papers. (The link I posted is shortened using a rootschat gadget. The  Canadian attestation papers are to be found on the Collections Canada site).  Ann Elizabeth Attwood married Jesse Radford in 1894, and this couple are neighbours of Morley and his parents in 1901.

The family are living on Dundridge Lane in 1901. Looking at the map, this is pretty much in Hanham

Morley A Attwood was still living with his father Joseph J Attwood in Dundridge Lane in 1911 and is recorded as sailing to Halifax in Canada on 3 April 1912.

The Attwood details all fit, and he is also on a few Canadian sites.  Many thanks for all the information.

The Robson name was so difficult to trace because the War Memorial had transposed his initials 

I only found out after seeing a grave stone for a Mary Jane Robson at Christ Church.  Her and her husband William had a son George William (not the W G engraved).  Mary Jane died in 1906, at the time William was manager at Hanham colliery.  Her probate index says she lived at Tenby House, Hanham, but it seems that this no longer exists. 

William re-married and died in Bishop Auckland.
