St Louis Missouri Pierces and Scanlons
« on: Saturday 12 July 14 17:50 BST (UK) »
Patrick Pierce was ba 1824 in Ireland. He arrived in the US in 1850 and appears in the 1850 census in Wooster, Wayne, Ohio working for the railroad. By 1860 he is living in St. Louis, Missouri and is a saloon and boarding house owner. He died in 1868 and was buried in a Catholic cemetery.

Johanna Scanlon was ba 1835 (although she gives a different age for every census) in Ireland (Irish Free State). She is living in Wayne, Wayne, Ohio in the 1850 census. She marries Patrick Pierce in 1851 in Franklin, Ohio. In 1860 she is living in St Louis, Missouri with husband and children. She died in 1909 and is also buried in a Catholic cemetery.

Together they had the following children: Margaret (spouse Michael Scanlon), Michael D, Ellen J (spouse John T Kearney), Catharine (spouse John Knox), Elizabeth Bridget (spouse Francis X Lautz), and Mary Alena.

I have had no luck discovering where they came from in Ireland. I'd so appreciate any help that someone can give me.
Thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat
It won't be easy to find them without more information and even than it may not be possible.

Do you have their marriage cert?
Does it have parents names?
Does both their ages vary in records?
It's very difficult to prove a record is the correct one, assuming one is found, without a place and/or parents names.
I had a look on RootsIreland which by no means has all baptismal records.
The closest I could find for Patrick is one in 1827 in Laois.
And 1835 Cork for Johanna.
Plus vairants for both.
The site is pay to view and only has transcriptions, the entire country isn't covered and there are lots of gaps in the surviving records.
Without more information there is no way to prove or disprove these two results.
Their marriage cert or entry in the church registry is your best bet to finding them in Ireland.

I have copy of the marriage license but it contains nothing but the most basic information. They married in Ohio.

At least I haven't missed anything obvious. I keep hoping someone will see the details and recognize a connection to their own family. Meanwhile, I'm looking at Ireland Census search forms 1841 & 1851 and have found a possible. At least the  names match :)

However, I hadn't thought to try a church record in Ohio. That might be a good possibility.

Thanks for your efforts.

This site also has possibilities, quite a few for Johanna

Pierse rather than Pierce though.

Have you looked for their arrival in America, although it usually only says Ireland.

Thanks so much for the link. It looks like an excellent source. I have a likely record of Patrick's arrival from Liverpool on the Ticonderoga, but all it says is native country: Ireland as you expected.

I am now trying to find some Catholic records in Franklin County. You nudged me in exactly the right direction.
